My First Batch Of Wrigglers!

No pics as of yet, trying to get hold of a camera that will actually pick the babies up lol

It's hard to get any type of good pictures of those tiny things.

I just took out Henry so he can recover. I was going to leave him longer but I noticed a large decrease in the number of fry and saw him eat one. I'm hoping there are more hiding because I can't see that many... because this was my first batch I wasn't sure if they were actually "free swimming" or not so I didn't take the father out until now. I still can't quite tell if they are swimming on their own but I know they aren't vertical anymore. Are they suppose to still be hanging out in the nest even if they are horizontal?

Thanks for any help! ;)

I took cooper out of mine yesterday, he was so tired and hungry. I'm not sure how well the fry are going to do, they are swimming properly but spend most of the time on the bottom of the tank or clinging to the frogbit or moss. I gave them their first feed of walter worm this morning and they seem to be eating it, or at least trying. Don't worry about how many you can see, they are good at hiding, it looks like there's only about 10 in my tank but when you look hard they are hiding everywhere!!!

Free swimming is when they are not just bobbing up and down from the nest, it happens when they start to swim horizontal not for massive distances but they can do it!
My last batch used to cling to plants all the time, it helps to have plants in because there are microscopic organisms on the plants that they can munch! also I think they feel more protected in there! and saves them from sitting on the bottom and getting possible amonia burn!

If he ate one you did well to remove him, my boy managed to eat all 200 fry over night I didnt get to save any! you learn from the male you have, next time he had babies I knew he would munch early so I removed him earlier and kept a closer eye on things.

You probably have more fry than you think because the egg sack has most likely been absorbed by now and that was the easiest thing to spot now your fry will be mainly see through so they are so hard to find! but dont panic, you'll see them when they swim your eye can catch movement way easier than a tiny tiny spec sitting on a leaf!
:good:

What a relief you guys! I'm seeing about 10-15 right now still hanging out near the front, I'm hoping more are hiding in the plants. I did see two of them actively go after some infusoria I put in so that's a good sign!

Wisonnw8, that's horrible you lost all 200! I'll know better next time to take him out earlier.

Thanks a bunch!

I got myself a magnifying glass because it's really hard to see those tiny fry! I was trying to take a picture of one that was sitting on the glass at the front but my camera instead focused behind him to another cutie!! So here's a 4x magnified picture of one of my little babies!!

So cute!

I'm so jealous that you can get pics of yours!!! They look a little bit bigger than mine (i know they're magnified). All i can really see on mine are their little orange eyes, i've got a lot more swimming about today and they're a lot more interested in the food. Still haven't managed a count up yet, little buggars keep moving to much! I'm glad yours are coming on well x

I can't wait for you to post some pictures so we can compare them. I'm envious your fry have orange eyes, mine all have black eyes. I have noticed one particular fry that is much darker than the rest, I can tell from a side angle and a top down view. Also it's so fun to see their itsy tiny mouths open and close when they eat!

I think I have only about 15-20 but it's hard to tell...

My husband managed to count 15 swimming before he got fed up cause they were darting about to much. I'd estimate i've got about 30 or so, will try counting again tomorrow lol. I'm gonna try and borrow a better camera so hopefully will have some pics!!!

Yeah my husband insists he can't even see them much less count them!

What are you feeding yours at this age/stage? I'm feeding infusoria (there are plenty of live plants in there anyway) as well as some egg yolk in the morning. I can tell mine are eating because they have visible fat yellow/orange bellies.

At the moment i'm feeding them walter worms twice a day and they get infusoria from the plants in their tank. I have also started doing water changes as the water was looking a bit dirty, so i'm doing about 40% at least every other day at the moment. They are swimming really well now, i've got a better camera coming tonight so should have some pics up later x

Good luck with the fry! Make sure they don't get eaten
No, they'll be fine.

I hope not!! Thanks!

awsome reading. Hope you manage to count your fry as they get large lol.

Yeah it will be so much easier when I can actually see them without ruining my eyes!

Great news, I can't wait to see pictures. I've noticed the caudal tails starting to form and they have their little pectoral fins already. Some are noticeably smaller than others and I worry they aren't eating well! Maybe a small water change will help. Good idea to start doing that now!! :good:

Awww great pics of your babies :good: It's always difficult to count them at this age. I thought I had 6 in one of my current spawns but there are actually 13 now that they're bigger and I can see them lol

I know what you mean, I seem to find more and more everyday!

So tomorrow will be their 1 week birthday!! Yah! Since this is my first batch I had no idea how fast they would grow! Already I can see a massive difference just from two days ago! Here are a few pictures I captured right when I was feeding them. I can already see their little betta personalities!! I just love it when they look up at the surface for food and move their little eyes when they watch something!!

Looking for food!

I can see their little bodies thickening up nicely.
