My Favorite Accident

How did a spawn in the grow-out tank happen? I'm assuming you noticed right away or was it like one week there were many more bettas?
Well, it was a 30 long and it only had three boys and like 10 girls left in it. I had already pulled the green boys weeks before. I noticed one male staking out an entire half of the tank for his own PLUS he had a huge bubblenest, so I stuck my hand in and destroyed his nest. The *next* day I came in and he was being a total butthead with another nest, so I decided that since there were so few fish- I was just going to jar them all. So I started draining the tank and pulling kids as it drained. Then I noticed his nest was stuck to the glass.....with eggs in it, and he was frantically trying to recover the fallen eggs. So I put him and the majority of the eggs in a KK, where he ate them (can't blame him) the rest that were stuck to the sides- I scraped them off with a card and put them in a jar with a couple of inches of water where they hatched and the rest is history :)
This was my "one gallon" spawn as well. I kept them in a kritter keeper for the first couple/few weeks, then they went to a five, then bowls. I was quite amazed at how well they turned out.

Thanks,guys

I know, believe me, I know!!
phoenyxrysing has a spawn right now from an orange sibling AND what I believe to be the green mother, so I'm anxious to see what they turn out like! I have one orange boy left, but he leans towards pink'ish orange and I've been contemplatiing on trying another, the curiosity is overwhelming I tells ya!

I want him lol. Man wuv, help me out, I just dunno what I'm doing wrong with my spawns. Do you use chlorinated city water? Sry to go off topic.
He's definitely the kind of range I like!

Yeah, I just use tap water, I don't let it age or anything  I treat it with Prime and amazon Rain, that's it. I don't know whats going on with yours either, sometimes I feel like I couldn't kill them if I tried, maybe it's just the Texas water (doubtful, our water sort of gross, maybe thats what they like? ) or it's the Amazon Rain. I swear by that stuff and I believe it makes my water golden.

well it's weird because all my adults couldn't be happier, and well our water isn't the cleanest either, and the pH should be fine... I have no idea. Do you leave dirt on the bottom, or clean it anyway even when they are only 5 days old? Cause that's what I did and they got stirred up a little but I don't think that should kill them.

Shame on you wuv, teenage sex. Your a bad mom

Amazing really, so many of us are having problems getting even one spawn running. This is the kind of accident I would not mind having. And he is a nice looking accident to boot.

redbetta~ I do my first water change at one week,in the meantime I remove any nasties like dead brine, poo etc with a turkey baster as soon as I spot it. After my first water change I start doing very large water changes every day, whether it looks dirty or not. I start by removing 60% of the water the first couple of days, then 80% for the remaining days until they go to a large grow out (and then I do them every other day in the big tanks). To refill the tanks during the first week I take a large 32 ounce cup and set it up on top of the lid of the next tank over (since I usually have more than one spawn going when I do spawns) or on a shelf up a bit higher and I fill the cup and let it drain into the fry tank via an airline tubing, the fry don't even notice. As the cup empties I pour more water into it so I don't have to restart the syphoning process, it works great. By the time they're two weeks old I just start pouring water in slowly by the cupful since the draining takes a bit of time and they should be tough enough to take the current by then. By week three I'm dumping water in and the fry dont care.

ral~ I know, I know, for shame! I've never had a spawn happen like that though, and I've kept kids together for more than a year. Who'da thunk it? But they turned out wonderful, the two green males are just gorgeous. One is pretty small and very dark with little red, the other is fully masked and very bright, also with little red.Way less than the F1. Cute, cute!

wuv, thanks, I know I did it just like that, with a turkey baster, I carefully dug out all the dirt and added a lil bit more water. Ack, I'm trying my coppers next so maybe it will work out.

He is gorgeous Wuv. You know my one boy from you has a hard time eating. It seems like his mouth is too small for the pellets, so I crunch them up before I give them to him then he chows down.

hmmm, interesting, maybe I'll try that for him. I know it's terrible but I just give him the pellets anyway, poor kid gets so frustrated and then when they finally sink and swell, he eats them. I suppose I could save him the frustration

He is just dreamy  . Every time I see your little ones I wish I had more room. But alas I do not. Perhaps that is a good thing.

I am still holding out for a marble. I think, make that I know I will go out and get another tank for a pretty marble :look: .
