erm ye my cat caught a bird, but ive managed to get the bird from him, at the moment ive moved the bird into a large box with a few towls, theres no visable damage apart from abit of blood that i can see at the base of the bird, im leaving it for an hour or so though as i dont want to stress it. whats the best i can do for this poor little bird??

From lots of experience owning those furry little bird manglers, find a hedge and put it in a quiet spot, not really alot you can do unless you're gonna go all out and bring vets into it :( What type of bird is it?

Most will die of shock so leave it in a quite area (in the box) for a while so it can calm down best thing to do is too first have a looky to see what type of bird it is and if its endangered in your area if it is endangered take it to a local vets as they will take it and if its healthy will pass it on to a wildlife santuary for recovery.(used to work for a vets and have 5 cats myself) If its not endangered and in an hour or two it is looking quite alert take it to a nearby feild with nice dence headgerows and free it.

ok guys thanks for your comments and help, the little guy seems to be doing well, still alive so im going to guess he wont die of shock!

meguro - he has a bell please dont post worthless post, it junks up the forums

im going to leave him for anouther hour then take him to our local field :)

cats will catch things bell or not if you dont want dead wildlife keep your cat indoors

They sure will.

It's also natural behaviour. The thing you strive so hard to let fish do.

My cat always got rewarded for it.

well, either way the bird is definatly fine, opened the box to check on him and he flew out! good thing he was in the bathroom....just opened the window and the bird chirpd and was gone lol - thats my good deed for the day :)

the thing is there is nothing natural about cats killing birds in the uk
ie an unnatural number of cats are kept there population does not decrease as the amount of prey diminishes as they are fed by the owners etc................. this defies natural law

if we are prepared to call this ok I should be allowed to let my dogs out and they naturally will kill cats should i reward them for this.

not having a go at anyone particular it it just I object to cleaning cat crap out my nieces sand pit and if it where my dogs doing it i would be prosecuted. Cats should stay indoors

To be honest it was rarely birds, and it is natural instinct...

Normally was rabbits or mice. And the cat rarely left the garden. Since my mum kept horses we had a fair bit of space, it was useful to keep mouse population low so the feed and stuff wasn't nested in, and the rabbits would have been shot if it weren't for the cat having them.

You can get a gadget for the garden which keeps cats away, it produces a very high pitch (not heard by humans) which cats hate. A friend of mine had a cat crap problem in his garden, put one of these gadgets in and no more problems. Not sure if it would be a problem for your dogs though? Just a thought, maybe on it at night only if you have good sound proof windows :) Still a lot of hassle to go through when it shouldn't be like this...

As for cats killing things, I'm not going there...I don't particularly like cats, I'm more of a dog person, but each to their own. Let's not go into the reasons why :)

Sorry to dissapoint but it IS natural for cats to catch and kill birds(its the thrill of the chase) just like it IS natural for some dogs to kill cats. Im not wanting to "have a go" but it is natural the reason why its not acceptable for dogs to kill cats is that alot of people own cats and its not that often that dogs find "wild/feral" cats. My dog is a b****r for catching cats cos its what comes naturally to him. every animal is different, some wont chase others and some will.
As for the cats catching birds its something thats always going to happen while its allowed to go outside but at the same point its not really fair to keep a cat permanently indoors, either way its up to you.

floyds mum did you actually read what i said
maybe read some basic biology books its called an eco system and cats are not part of it that was my point

i dont disagree it comes naturally to cats to kill at all just that their is alot of cats applying un natural preassure on species that need help ie ground nesting birds etc

as for been cruel keeping them indoors at least they do not cause road traffic accidents as people swerve to avoid them and maybe it is nicer to keep your pet safe

maybe tell seffie she is cruel as she has indoor cats as well

also blind children may disagree it is cruel with the constant danger of toxo plasmosis

I am with Chester. There is nothing natural about domestic cats. They were domesticated and bred to look as we see them today then shipped all over the world to the dismay of the local NATIVE wildlife.

I understand what your saying but are you also saying that it is not natural for a greyhound, for example, to chase cats or rabbits? All im saying is it comes naturally for cats to chase birds, kittens try to catch them.
Im not saying its cruel to keep them inside, a very close friend keeps hers inside, just that if they are an animal that naturally roams, i did not mean to offend people if i have done so then i am sorry.

Yes they do cause some accidents but so does alot of wildlife.
And as for the blind children why would a blind child be at any greater risk than a fully sighted child? the parents teach the child all they need to know.
