He's only been in my life for a few months, but over the past week, he has become lethargic, not eating, hiding in plants and decor..hasn't been meeting me at the water edge as usual, today i found him "panting" on the gravel. He seems to be loosing his life. i can even reach in to smooth him, something he would never allow. the only symptom seems to be finrot, not very visible, but fins have been getting shorter slowly since we had him, he has been treated for finrot for weekly intervals as he seemed to perk up, but then this week not well at all, and i think he wants to go, but i keep encouraging him ( yes i call him my boy, and tell him he can do coz i love him. I know I'm nuts. but I'm really gonna miss him, if he does go

water stats are 0,0,0 the nitrate level rarely raises above 5/10 as he gets waterchanged every week. ( sundays) as he looked not right, i waterchanged today even though the stats were 0.0.5. I have even tried putting him in a cup and tried feeding him with fry food no 1, to see if i could get any form of nutrition into him. when made him move as if to eat it. but i'm not sure if he did. nyway, i get a feeling he wont last the night, i feel like I should euthanise him, as i dont want to see the poor little guy suffer. what do you think

has lost his fin colour, seems grey rather than silver, and gills are moving very slowly. his pectoral fins moving is the only other sign of lfe

what do i do?

You need to get him closer to the top of the tank, so he can breath in air, use a breeders net or a plastic tub.

i have built a nest of elodea inside a breeding trap with the upper level floor inserted. its keeping him right at the edge of the water for him to take air in, but he isnt, but his gills are taking deep breaths if that sounds right, i thought panting would be quicker breaths, if you understand. i put some fry no 1 in there too as hes not moving at all. Maybe its too late, but I shall try my best to keep my little fella, unless anyone thinks keepinghim going is cruel? x

well hes still motionless, on his side but his gills are still going? How long should I allow him to keep going like this? bear in mnind he's lying on a bed of elodea, to hold him just under the water leel so he can use his labyrinth organ without having to move at all. Am I doing this right or is there something else I can do to help him?

That's crazy- everything you posted originally completely echoes what is happening to my betta now. I'm so sorry that Blaze didn't make it D:
I've been told that it could be a bacterial infection, just in case the information can come in useful for you in the future if you see this happen again.

Once again, I'm sorry you lost him :(

Sadly, a lot of the time, these problems are down to inbreeding.
That's the price we pay for keeping bettas these days.
