My bettas are spawning...

I'm sorry that I haven't been posting much, with school starting and all. But yesterday I placed my new bettas in teh spawning tank together. The male uilt a fabulous nest under teh cup, the female did her thing, kept going up to teh nest to be chased away. But it was terrific, there was no loss of fins, no bites or wounds. They didin't spawn by lights out so i put her back in. I woke up at 5 o'clock am and place her back in with teh male. Then I went back to sleep. When I woke up again at 7 o'clock they were embracing!! Everything was going good!! Still no big or major wounds, HUGE bubble nest, and they were doing their parts. The female was even helping the male pick up the eggs. they've been spawning for at least 2 hours now, and still verything is going perfect. Its a dream come true, accually everything is going to plan!!!!!! Just had to tell you guys!

I know!! I wish I had prepared with a camera. But I have been snapping lots of photos so I'll post them soon!!! They're still spwaning!! It's been at least 3 1/2 hours!! And there's still at least 8 eggs coming out of her at a time!! She isn't getting any skinnier either!!

Ok, I'm a bit worried about this. The book that I bought a while ago when I first started breeding bettas on teh side says something that doesn't really scare me, just makes me wonder, WHAT THE HECK IS GOING ON!!?? It says, "The spawn will usually last for 1-3 hours, but in some rare intances the pair will spawn for up to 5 hours" Well right at this very moment they are embracing...ITS BEEN 6 1/2 HOURS!!!!!! What the hecks going on? All teh other spwns I've had lasted for 1 to 2 hours...NOT 6 1/2!!!!! Help please,

Good luck with the Bettas, Ron. Gouramis spawn the same way and it is really a fantastic thing to see.

Have you bred bettas before? What do you plan to feed the fry?

Ron, don't panic.

First, are you sure they are actually still spawning successfully?

Second, do either look exhausted or in distress?

If not, just watch them closely and give them a little more time. But, as soon as it seems like it is no longer productive, take her out. Nature does not always go by the book.

I feed my betta fry many different things. About the first 6 days after they hatch they are still soaking in their yolk sacs and I don't have to feed them. But afterwards I have to supply them with food each morning and evening. For the first few days I feed them Infusia and Microfood. MicroFood is very small food particals that fixes with water, much like Liqi-Fry, but less dense. Then I feed Microworms and BBS. After teh first 2 weeks I switch to BBS and minced blood worms, and a little microworms. When teh first month arives I place a few frshly dropped guppy fry in with the betta fry. The guppy fry will teavh teh betta fry how to eat frozen and freeze dried foods. And when the 2nd month comes around, I wean them to pellets. I feed my bettas pellets with a little of blood worms every now and then because it would be just too xeprensive to keep buying live or dried foods. I have quite a bit of bettas and whenever I get a inpulse to breed a pair I do. Its quite fun!!

P.S. Inchworm, still anywhere from 8-20 eggs are being realaesed by her. They're going a little slower, but still going. At one point he was blocking her from the nest so I went to get a net to remove her. When I came back she was unconsiouse at the top and he was collecting eggs. This is bazzare!!
