I'm not really into Bettas, although I occasionally breed them (just for variety) and (from experience) I know the Betta specialists are not only sensitive people, but also very knowledgable on the subject & what I would merely classify as a Betta splendins, you lot have some other classifications for to narrow it down.

Please tell me in your terms, what this is exactly...... (one of the males I bred in March this year) - & sorry... he would not sit still for a nice photo, hence the poor quality. And also....(While I've got the floor) What causes the ugly looking algea on the plant in the background.

that looks like a Veiltail (i.e. the common variety found at fish stores) or possibly a Spade tail based on the pictures. both of them are Betta splendens anyways :good:

the algae in the plant is caused by either of the following: too much light and/or not enough nutrients. i know because my tank is pestered with them from lack of nutrients

The algea is also attached to the glass at some spots.... A tough variety & very hard to remove.. The fish is alone in a 3ft x 1ft x 18"

he does look like a VT or a Spade Tail.

I would ask if he is normally that color - very thick stress marks.
you mention he is in a very large tank on his own (comparative to his Size)

I wold try moving him to something alot smaller say only 2gallons or less. if his stress lines go away leave him in the smaller tank on his.

now this is all speculative untill the OP responds. but just pointing out observations.

What stress lines??? He's as happy as ... "a fish in water" If you tell me what to look for to also identify the stress marks, then I've learnt yet another thing.

The reason why I selected to post his picture is because he was the only one with the red markings on him.

All his bretheren and sisteren are more in the line of the one in pic below.....

Now I cannot help it if the damn fish won't sit still and pose, but since the objective is just to show the colour I s'pose this pic (one of about 25 try shots) will do.

ahh Ok No worries.
Just you see in the 1st pix posted he has a dark line running horizontally from his behind his head to tail.
thats the stress lines in a male or female.
its tells us human people they are unhappy.

To get rid of algae on plants gets some amano shrimp or cherry shrimp. I have them in my discus tank and they do an an awesome job of keeping the plants, driftwood etc all nice and clean.

cherry shrimp that is worth knowing. Lovely vt...my boy in the big tank stresses (the only one) I think it is the size of the tank (I honestly believe they dont like loads of space, BUT he doesnt like having his photo taken and gets stressy for that). All my other boys are too lazy too stress out!
Nice fishy though.

Gill..... I do appreciate, but the import quarintine rules (etc. etc.) applicable at the end of the day, makes it barely worth the while if you know what I mean....
