My betta, Dolphin developed a large lump directly in front of his right eye about a month ago. I have tried aquarium salt, Macyrin Two, and Melafix. It is only getting larger. Part of it has turned white, and a small amount of it is red. He has seemed to be less active and he has been trying to stay at the bottom of the tank, and hiding quite a bit. Dolphin is still eating and moving. He is in a 5 gallon tank with 78F water with a filter. I do water changes every week. Please help!

Seems like a tumor.
Water parameters?
How often do you do water changes and how much do you change at a time?
I'll @ people who will know more then I do.

When I test his water, all the numbers are okay. His pH is 7.2, the alkalinity is 120, the hardness is 75, and his nitrate is 0. We do a 25-30% change every week, and a 100% change once a month.

Do you use dechlorinator? If so, what kind?

nitrate is 0, and i'm not sure about ammonia, because our pH test doesn't measure it.
You need an ammonia test ASAP, that is the most important thing to test for.
How long have you had the fish?
Is the tank cycled?
Did you add anything new to the tank in the two weeks before the lump formed?

Okay, I will see if I can pick one up tomorrow. I have had the fish for a year and a half. We did not cycle his tank when we first got him a while ago. It was the first time the tank was used, but we kept a close eye on the pH levels. No, we didn't do anything different, it just showed up out of the blue.

If the tank was not cycled before you put your fish in, he was probably suffering from a buildup of ammonia and nitrites for the better part of a month or two, which might have caused this. pH is not nearly as important to monitor as your ammonia and nitrites, and nitrAtes need to be looked at as well.

Okay, is there anything that I can do other than get a ammonia test kit and see what it is, and is there any way I can fix my mistake?

Other than getting a test kit, I am unsure what your next step would be. I know a moderate amount about how to get to the root of a problem, but unfortunately not a whole lot about fixing problems like this. I’ll @ more people who would be able to help more than me. Good luck! Dolphin is a beautiful fish :)

Dolphin thanks you! I will keep a close eye on his ammonia when I get the test kit.

The possible tumour cannot be treated at home so if that's what it is he will just need to be kept comfy - warm (78-80), water with soft plants to rest in and under. Every betta needs floating plants so make sure you have some.
The red marks in the lump are concerning as it could be infected. Do a 75% water change with warm conditioned water every day for a fortnight. As he has already had chemical treatments uber clean water is the preference.
Keep his stress down and make him comfortable.

Okay, I will keep his tank as comfortable as possible. Thank you!
