Hi there davo86, thankyou for your reply and helpful comments! Unfortunately I am begining to realise that yes this set-up will not be good enough for keeping the discus I want. I realised the buenos aries tetras were becoming nippy so I got rid of them but have perhaps been led into false pretenses as I have seen pictures of discus being kept in the same tank as a red tailed shark, loaches and so forth. How is this so?

tank size may be a factor but with something as delicate as Discus I would rather not risk it myself, The shark especially could quite easily/quickly do some damage once it matures

When I bought the filter I actually thought it was more than powerful enough for the size of tank but as you say, it isnt so I will look at getting something bigger when I hopefully get a bigger tank, a 6x2x2 foot fingers crossed. This would be big enough for the discus correct? lol I would keep this tank in the outhouse and have the new tank in its place, time to convince the wife haha...

When looking to buy filters I always look at the 'true' turnover of the filter as opposed to the suggested tank size, this gives you a much better idea of how the filter will cope with your full stocking plans. Yes a 6x2x2 will be more than big enough for Discus and tankmates, anything bigger than around 55-60G would be fine for 5 Discus +

do you like the tank though :D

Yes the setup looks great, you've created a very nice south american biotope :good:

Instead of getting Discus how about adding another 3 Blue Rams and then adding a few more shoals of say Cardinals and black neons and then perhaps an albino bristlenose to finish?

the tank looks amazing, fantastic job mate really well done :good:

i also say a few more Rams

Thanks and I have changed my mind over the discus until I can provide a better home for them such as my dream 6x2x2. Now this widens my choices greatly as to what else can go in there, I am certainly considering getting the sucking loach out as he's becoming destructive to the plants and considering an albino bristlenose they look ugly but great! And would definately like a mate for the ram. Also perhaps 6 glass cats.... This would take the totaly amount of fish to around 40 so I should imagine that would be about maximum for this tank. I want more tanks!!!!!

i also say a few more Rams

you could get 2 Blue and 2 Gold they are the same fish just different color morphs :)

all the best mate ;)

ive convinced my mrs for a juwel rio 400 yay I will get those discus, just looking for the right deal now, preferably second hand maybe from aquarist classifieds :good:

thanks Paul! Ive just actualy bought the juwel rio 400 from e-bay £160!!!!!!!!! a nice 400 litres for me to play with as opposed to this tanks 142!!! cheap as chips. so I will be getting those discus as I said hehe, bless my wife she lets me get away with so much. Now im trying to convince her to keep both tanks in the livingroom but she wants this tank in the outhouse or sold! :(, it wont be sold hehe, so i'll keep you posted with the goings on of the new tank, when I pick it up this weekend hopefully.

Im now thinking a sand substrate (argos) playsand, with some caribsea eco complete underneath for the new discus tank, what do you guys think and what sort of tankmates would be suitable? apart from the regular cardinals, bleeding hearts.

Playsand sounds fine, not sure about the eco complete, as if it's argonite it may end up increasing pH. You will have to sift through the sand too, so they will end up just mixing.

Tank mates cardinals, rummy nose, sterbai cory, angelfish, some plecos (be careful), rams, apisto.

Yes thanks DiscusKeeper403 I am now thinking anything like argonite under the sand just wont do, but am looking for something like clay or mud, some decent planting substrate with lots of nutritional value. Definately going with the sand though and still reserching tankmates but now I actually have the tank (which makes the 30 gal look tiny) Im more concerned with the type of co2 and ro units.....

heres the new toy anyway, £160 off ebay and one of my two little monkeys. Fun times ahead. by the way, the tanks not staying there near the window...

you cant keep german blue rams with neon tetras or most cories, due to the temperature requirements of rams...28 minimum...with 30 being preferable, fail to meet this and they wont last very long

a discus tank should ideally be around 28 Celsius anyway so the rams would be ok, neons, cardinals and rummy nose tetras are very often and happily kept with discus often and seem to do absolutely fine, there is plenty of plecs and other compatible fish that like the higher temperatures also.
i had a trio of gbr's breeding in a 125 litre tank last year at around 26 Celsius so temps below 28 does not necessarily an automatic end to heir lives.
some people only have bad things to say, a bit of CONSTRUCTIVE criticism wouldn't go a miss.

read the sub-title mate

never said it would automatically end their lives...i think you should read a few scientific papers published by experts on the make up of german blue rams, when kept at lower temperatures their immune and digestive systems are surpressed, leaving them vunerable to disease, and malnutrition.

thats good then as the rams will be in the discus set up. Any suggestions as to what sort of ro system i should be looking for and also pressurised co2 system? thanks nick
