Right we're getting our first marine set up next weekend. It's an already mature tank, been running for yrs, just buying the whole set up off this bloke. Just wanted to make sure I've everything ready for the move... let me know if I've missed owt!

things we already have:-
millions of buckets
fish bags
polybox
big car :hey:
hydrometer (think that's the right word....tests the salinity of the water)
siphon's

things were getting with the tank:-
RO unit
UV Steriliser
hang on the back filter
skimmer
shed load of LR covered in mushroom corals
one big coral (apparently it's about 300 yrs old  so scared we're gonna kill it)
1 yellow tang
3 clown fish
a cupboard full of food/meds/books assorted fishy gubbins basically

things I need to get:-
marigolds (rubber gloves) for handling live rock
big jugs or wide mixing bowls.... we need to not take the corals out of the water right.... so big jugs, submerge them in the tank, then move the LR with the coral on into it and away we go!
RO Water, we're getting a RO unit with the set up, but we're gonna go one of the lfs' and get some in before as we won't have time to make any up so we wanna have some on hand.

well?? that OK?

Sounds great :D. Corals can be brought out of water for a brief time without damaging them. Enough time for you to lift it out and set it in a bucket for sure :good:. Especially mushrooms, they're troopers. My only suggestion is to have both fresh RO water and salted RO water on hand. Also remember, when re-setting up the tank, try to set your rocks on the glass and pour sand around them to prevent any settling and shifting over time which can lead to collapses. Good luck, and cant wait to see pics. Make sure you take some before you guys dismantle it :good:

yeah the tang's only about 3 inches so he's fine in there for now. we've already agreed with the lfs that we can exchange the yellow tang for credit. We're doing OK so far for credit, with closing down our two FW tanks and getting rid of some of the marine fish we've given him loads, he's just made a note of everything and is giving us credit off when we start stocking the marine tank, reckon we've £40 to spend in there already and that's without the tang. Should sort us out for clean up crew.

And yes I'll take plenty of pics, for our benefit too, gonna take a load of the back of it and how it's all rigged up so if we get stuck when we're setting it back up we can do it.

The bloke in the lfs said not to take the corals out of the water at all and I've read that somewhere else too, anyone else got any opinions. It'd definately make life easier if we can but I wouldn't wanna harm them.

it might just not be worth the risk with the corals. if you whip them out first then there out the way.

well last night i got a couple of pairs of marigolds.... don't think even the large ones will fit Ian though (he's a builder and he's got hands like spades!) so it looks like I'm doing all the tinkering with LR then
got some big plastic bowls and a jug, should be big enough for the LR with the corals in. we're gonna ring him on friday and get him to make up as much RO as possible in advance of us picking it up, some salt and some fresh. The other issue is the tap thing he's got the RO unit plumed into looks wierd, Ian say's he's never seen anything like it. So it looks like he's gonna have fun with plumbing next week trying to get it set up in time for when we first need some!

:)

......oh common Ski, you missed a massive item, that a tank move couldnt be accomlished without...

TOWELS! And LOTS of 'em! Double the amount you thought you'd use! :good:

ha ha yeah all the fishy towels and tea towels have been washed and are ready and waiting. Ian's just moved in so we've moved about 8 tanks in the last 3 months, we're well used to it..... and hooray for wooden floors ;) :D

Wooden floors, what a dream! I always get the "evil eye" from the old lady when I spill water. Ive had my fare share of wet socks, LOL!

ha ha we have a carpet on the hall and stairs and a big rug covering most of the bedroom floor, rest of the house is wooden floors, then lino in the kitchen and laminate in the bathroom so we can spill what we like pretty much! ha ha

This is one of the good points with us both being fishy mad, we understand why a water change is more important than the carpet.

Lol, how could I forget towels B) a necessity for any reef activity. Oh and a tip miss wiggle. When you're tinkering in the tank now or ever, have a towel over your shoulder and dry your hand off when you're done. Then, wipe the water off the front of the tank with the towel. Saltwater dries EXTREMELY streaky and if you forget, you'll notice. I've found that if you wipe it with a towel it removes most of the streaks so you dont have to wash the glass much :D

hmm good call, I will do so. Gonna have to wash all the fishy towels again tonight in preparation, one of the FW tanks sprung a leak last night :S
