While I was looking up species of cichlids to catalogue (I'm keeping track of all species I may be interested in purchasing along with general important information), I couldn't help, but to wonder...

Has anyone crossed a mouth brooder to a substrate or cave spawner and done so successfully? I would assume if they did they would use the sex that collects the eggs. (If that doesn't make sense, I mean use a female mouth brooder to something else if the female's species is a maternal mouth brooder or vice versa.)

If an attempt has been successful, how did the resulting fry act when they matured? I wouldn't doubt there could be some confusion involved. I wouldn't think it would be possible, but it's just something I was thinking about. (Not intending to try.)

Most fish who have a differant kind of spawning ritual are rarely closely related enough to the other fish in question to cross anyway. I could be wrong, but im not sure that they would actually pair up because of that.
