Hello everyone

You may have seen my other topic about some new corys (labelled as juliis) i bought a week or two ago, but yesterday i decided to buy another four to add to the three i had and i am pleased to say they look alot happier and come out of hiding alot more. But today when i looked at them some of the new ones had a pinky red patch below the scales by there gills.

Does anyone know what this may be ?

I think high ammonia level can cause raw looking gills, but my tank has zero ammonia so could it be that there was bad water quality at the lfs that i got them from ? Or could there be different problem ?

Does anyone know what it could be or are they fine ?

Thank you for reading

Hi fatfishman :)

Yes, ammonia can cause that kind of redness. It's possible that it could have developed during transport to your lfs, or even while in their tanks.

Is there anything else irregular about their looks or behavior? Are they eating?

If not, the best thing to do is to make sure your tank has fresh and clean water and then wait and see, They could recover nicely given a little time. If the damage is severe, there isn't too much you can do for them.

I hope they are OK.

This question crops up in the Emergencies forum fairly frequently, but here is the reply I posted there to save you searching.

"The best treatment for this problem, which is known as red blotch, is melafix. I do a 50% water change then add the suggested dose of Melafix and add a fairly strong air stone. The air stone is there because the treatment causes foaming and the turbulence from the air stone keeps the surface moving and the water fully oxygenated."

Thankyou for your concern guys the redness seems to have cleared up now, and yes they are eating so i guess they are going to be ok like you said Inchworm it was probably down to poor water quality in transport or at the lfs like you said, my water quality is good and they look fine.

Thanks for the help Inchworm & Coryman i appreciate it :good:

But for the past few days i have noticed that one of the original corys that i had has not grown (whereas the other 2 have grown noticeable) and seems to be very small and weak, I have yet to see him eat, he is very lathargic and his dorsal fin is always flat to his back (the other corys fins are all upright). I tried to drop food near him but when the other corys came over he swam slowly away. This is the same cory (very distict as he is so small) who i said sometimes goes to the surface and gulps air.

Do you know what could be the matter ?
What do you suggest i do to him if anything ?
