so the piece of wood has been in the baby tank for a week now and it's now developing a layer of 'fluff' all over it. Now it's a very long time since I had some new wood but if memory serves me right the 'fluff' is normal and is safe.

What I'm wondering is whether to put one of my two nerites in the baby tank ... I'm wondering if the snail would eat the 'fluff'

By 'fluff' I'm sure you all know what I mean ... like a furry layer over the wood surface

That is fungus.  And while some species are safe, some are highly toxic.  I had the latter once, on a piece of grapewood which is notorious for the toxic fungus.  Unfortunately there is no way to differentiate without microscopic examination by a microbiologist or similar to determine the species of fungus.  Most will say that the fungus on Mopani is generally safe; I'm not saying this isn't, just it may or may not be.

okay ... seriously considering taking it out now. I've got this little cory and tetra this far I can't kill them now

Yup, its a fungus.  It always has happened for me when adding mopani.  It generally goes away on its own fairly quickly.  You could take it out, scrub it off and put it back.

I hear what Byron is saying, but I think that different woods will get different fungus.  I wouldn't worry about it.  But, that's just me.

I've just taken it out and done a 50% water change. It's been hard work getting these baby fish this far I just can't risk their health now

thanks jag, that's exactly what it looked like and it smelt pretty bad too. I don't want that coming into contact with my fish - delicate little fry especially. I've chucked a couple of trumpet snails in the tank. There's a fine layer of sand in there so they can airiate that for me too.

The fry are still alive so I'm guessing no harm was done
