I just cleaned my 55g tank and I noticed that on the bottom of my driftwood, there seems to be some fur of some sort on it. It does not look like alge and it is a grey color. It picked up some of my substrate when I moved it. Any ideas?

Sounds like mold to me. Is their anyway that you could post a pic??? If you cant post a pick, what kind of fish do you have and what do you feed them. Also how much and what type of food?

Just sounds like the fungus that wood will grow over time. Mopani seems to be more susceptible to it than others.

Not a problem. If you don't like it just rub it off with something fish-safe.

My wood is covered in it. I hope the snails I'm getting will munch on it.

Not to seal the post or anything but I just bought some mopani driftwood and am soaking it to get the tanens out so they dont color my water. How long did it take before it stopped giving them off because I've been soaking mine for about 3 weeks now in a 5 gallon bucket replacing the water almost every day, and it still colors the water.

I soaked my piece for a month in the toilet cistern and it still discolored my water. Just do water changes until it goes away.

now why didnt i think of that

schooly20 you might want to trying soaking it in boiling water. speeds up the process by quite abit.

on the main topic, my wood also has this fur-like thing. nothing harmful i guess

Daily rinses, constant soaking and no hassle. Genius!

How did you go about ensuring it was clean before introducing it to your fish. I'm guessing the cistern isn't the most hygienic place?

I'm pretty sure water from the bowl won't flow up into the cistern.

I just scrubbed the mold it was growing off and rinsed it under the hot tap.

I just didnt know if it was something to worry about or not. My tank is in my sig. I am not worried if it happens naturally. I just wanted to make sure that I was not getting any sort of outbreak in my tank.
