Hi, i was wondering if its at all possible to mix cory species into one shoal?

at the minute ive got 3 bronze corydoras (http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?/topic/374963-paulw333s-roma-200)

but id like to have a larger shoal of catfish along the bottom, ive seen some beautiful panda corys that i really like and wondered if i would be able to get them!

advise? :) :)

Given your current stocking as per your linked thread...

8 Lemon Tetra's
6 Red Phantom Tetra's
2 Bolivian Ram's (m&f hopefully)
1 Female Dward gourami
1 Pitbull Pleco
3 Bronze cory's
1 (rarely seen) Amano Shrimp

Panda Corydoras would not be a good choice, as your water needs to be at least 25C for those Bolivian Rams, which Pandas will not do well at all year round. You would get better results by upping your Bronze to 8, perhaps even 10 (I noticed a massive change when doubling a group of Emerald Brochis to 12 from 6, looked amazing seeing them move like a flock of birds across the tank floor), leaving Pandas for a more sub-tropical tank

I would never recommend keeping corys in a tank with Rams unless you are not especially fond of corys. Rams have been known to pick out their eyes and otherwise stress corys out.

thanks for the advice, ill slowly introduce more of the bronze guys then

Thanks for your recommendation Inchworm, I've had them together for quite a few years now and seen no signs of bullying or stress at all, maybe i just have a placid pair

Kribensis, yes, they will have a go at corys, Rams, uncertain. But im sure we've had this discussion before :)

I dont think anyone is "scare mongering", just passing comment based on experience, which varies as much as the advice.

As Tizer said, he's not had any problems, while others have. Same with the Kribs, normally, its a straight-up no go, but in some cases, proof shows it can work. (Albeit not very often!)

back to mixing corys - im not sure about pandas. I tried mixing corys 8 different ways. Sometimes they will shoal together, sometimes not. depends on species and personalities. The only time i had luck was with mixing peppered with trili.

Mine pretty much hang out together, they do have their little groups of the same species which stick together, but personally in a tank, unless you have a huge shoal of one species, you probably wont find they shoal that much has a unit.

The only time i've seen it recently is when i had 20 bronze youngsters, and they stuck together quite a bit,bit like playing follow my leader
Theres a video somewhere on here

Mine don't either.

scare mongering?
scare mongering? just saying my Rams don't have any issues with my corys mate.

No Darren i wasnt saying that you are scare mongering mate, i was commenting on what inchworm said about the rams picking the cory's eyes out ect. :good:

Anyhow, ive added 3 more Bronze Cory's do the mix, 6 in total now, will try and get some pics soon, cant say to much on the quality though the only camera i have in a blackberry bold mobile camera which to be honest....isnt really good!
