Hi Barracuda518 :)

Those are both 55 gallon tanks. I have 3 of them that are cory communities, as well as a few smaller tanks that house one to four species.

This week I am in the process of switching them around so that all the corys are grouped together by their optimum temperature conditions. I think they will be better this way rather than keeping them mostly at a happy medium. It's letting me move my C. sterbai out of their species tank and into a community, which they seem to enjoy. One of the fish they are now with is C. haraldschultzi, which they school with in their natural setting. They seem to be much happier and active. :D

Well it looks really good. Do you have anything in the tank for them to hide in? I have piece of fake drift wood and some plants. I also have a mountain looking thing that I put in there because it was hollow in the middle. You think I ought to take that stuff out or leave it as it is?

Well, I went to PetsAtHome yesterday, big mistake. It was a totally pointless drive to lincoln to enquire about cories, they had little selection, and when I talked about buying groups he told me,

"Cories must be kept in groups of NO MORE than 2, due to them being algae eaters. They will die if kept in larger groups."

I asked him if he would sell them to me (without guarentee), yet he said it was against the policy of their shop to sell fish to an owner, who is going to place the purchased fish, in 'unsuitable tank conditions.' :(

I know he was talking complete rubbish, but im glad in a way. The colours they had really were plain, and hopefully I could pick up some more interesting strands at other LFS and garden centres.

ive been told that before. at petsmart i was once told there should be NO MORE than 1 cory per 5 gal or they wont have enough food. complete BS............

btw i have a question about corries. right now i have a solo albino cory :*) . anyway once i up grade the tank to a 29 gal the planned stock would be: 1 angel fish, 1 M/F pair of german blue rams, 3 corries, 3 ottos, and 5-7 of a small schooling fish such as neon, glo lite, harliquins, etc(still trying to decide). i was wondering what would be good corries to get with my albino one.........i dont seem to be able to find any albinos anymore except at petco and thiers never look very healthy.

I was told only 1 or 2 in my 180 litre tank completely! And thats like 50 gallons if im correct.. :/

Hi Barracuda518 :)

I think that's up to you. The conventional wisdom seems to be that corys have bad eyes and need shade to be happy.

When I moved to my new apartment in August, I had too much work to do just moving the tanks, to set them up the way I wanted, and I wanted to be able to observe them closely to be sure they settled in well. They seemed fine without the caves, so I never put them back.

As for the bright light, a little sun comes through my curtains and blinds and shines on several tanks for a little while each day. From what I can see, it has no effect on the corys at all. They lay right where they are with the sun shining right on them. As long as they show no stress, I will no longer think of caves as a necessary fixture in cory tanks, but rather as an optional one. There is no doubt that if you add one, they will use it, but I don't think it's required any more.

I removed every thing from one side of the tank this morning to see how they reacted. I left a lot of plants and caves on the other side so they could still hide if they want too. I was a bit worried because when I took out one of the caves, I couldnt get one of the newly acquired C. melanistius to get out. It just sat there and stared at me. So I just stood there and stared back holding the cave in the water. Well one of its buddies swam by and it couldnt resist and went after it. So far so good, most of the cories are on the open side digging in the sand and all. I think I will leave it that way for now

EDIT: Spelling

Whoa, Inchworm, you are my hero! I love cories

I had albino and Julii cories mixed 3:6, and they did fine up until I seperated them. They are fine seperated, too. ^^

Hi Vegan Peaches :)

Thank you ! :*)

I hope to see some more of your posts in the Catfish section. Do you have any pictures of your corys?

Hi Vegan Peaches :)

They look like happy corys to me!

A 29 gallon would make a very fine cory tank. Have you given any thought to what kind of corys you would put in there? It's big enough that you could have a very nice mixture of different species.
