I was going to stock my 30 gallon with some rainbows but I decided to move the fish from my 55 gallon into the 30 gallon instead. Now my 55 gallon is all freed up and I'd like to try some rainbows. I like the dwarf neon rainbow but I also like the banded rainbow fish so I was wondering if I could get a group of both? Like 4-5 each? Will they shoal together? Is it better to just go with one species? :dunno:

Elisabeth83 - I would have to say that I would deffinately get a few different species of rainbow fish to inhabit the 55 gal, and depending on which ones they are, will determine where they will swim in the tank. Here is a link to a website that offers up some information about rainbow fish and I hope you can decide on which ones to get.

I hope this helps.

Elisabeth83 - my bosmani's and red rainbows school together. in general in my limited experience rainbows are some of the most peacefull and docile fish around. i have never seen a rainbow show any aggression towards any other fish.

if you can get a couple of different rainbows it looks awesome. why dont you think of going for a species tank containing only different rainbows?

here is a very good resource for rainbowfish:

Please let me know how it works out with your rainbows as I plan to add Neon Rainbows to my 55g. I love many of the other Rainbows, but some tend to get larger and I seldom see them offered for sale.

red rainbows and boseman rainbows are lovely and mix really well

I still plan on getting some dwarf neon rainbows but at the moment I cant afford them :p They are about 8-10 US dollars each here. I'd like to get 4-6 :D

That's an awesome price! Coming from Michigan it's hard living here knowing how cheap things are there :sly: Anyone who complains about prices in the states should come here. Then they will realize just how good they got it  :p

Dwarf Neon Rainbows are $9.99 the cheapest I've seen up to about $12 each. For Tennessee, that is expensive since the cost of living is less here and jobs pay less. I've seen other Rainbows offered for up to $16. 3 for $10 is an excellent price!

Rainbows are shoaling fish in a loose kind of way and are better kept as larger groups of maybe one or two species. The neon dwarf are beautiful fish and I would definitely recommend a nice shoal of them, you should also try to get a mixture of males and females so that the males show their best colours, the females are smaller and not as colourful but they show of the males to the best advantage. I think u could then also get a small shoal of some of the bigber rainbows, like the Red's or Boesmanni's again a mixture of males to females, but remember these grow quite large so dont overstock. Here in the UK I recently saw dwarf neons on sale for £4.00 but I have seen them cheaper and didnt buy them as I thought that was too dear. Red Rainbows here always cost £5.00 for a good sized juvenile fish. Recently my lfs had Macculoch rainbows they were very nice fish and dont grow quite as big, I would definitely recomend them if u ever see them though I think they are quite rare. Hope this helps
