Okay this has been bothering me since I've had this particular fish...

All of the LFS in my area apparently get fish from the same sources, and all of them have "Emerald Green Corys" labeled as Brochis Splendens, but these young fish do not have the proper number of radials on the dorsal fin. So what is the likelyhood that they are in fact the green variety of C. Aeneus mistaken as B. Splendens? Am I correct in assuming that the fish wouldn't grow additional radials as it got older?

"these young fish do not have the proper number of radials on the dorsal fin"

Once the dorsal fin has developed, which is usually by the end of the second week, al Corydoradinae species have there required number of fin rays, they do not increase in number as they get older. In actual fact young Brochis display a very large sail fin dorsal, but C. aeneus do not.

What is the body length of thes so-called 'Emerald Cats'

All the ones I've seen are still fairly small...between a little less than an inch to an inch and a half. Of course the labels stating adult size vary from store to store... I've seen them marked at 2.75 inches (a very C. aeneus size) and 4 inches, but they have always been the same fish (i.e. the shorter dorsal fin).

Just for reference, here is a picture of a 2" C. aeneus with some close to 3" B. splendens:

Its pretty easy to tell the difference. Hope that helps.

My guess is that someone mixed up the designations "Emerald Green Corys" and "Emerald Green Catfish."

You say easy, but they look the same to me. What do you see that is different? (besides the size) I don't think it is so easy.

Body shape is different. Brochis splenden have a deeper body, almost like a hump in that picture. Aeneus/Corydoras are slimmer, longer compared to the depth/height

Brochis splendensare deeper bodied, have a longer more pointed snout and have up to 12 soft dorsal rays

Corydoras aeneus are more torpedo shaped, have a shorter rounded head and 7 or 8 soft dorasl rays.

The dorsal fin is the real give away.
