hello to every one on this great forum;

I have just started the hobby about four weeks ago, but since I have started, I have done all the big nono's in the book. Well its late I think now, but I am at a situation where I might be able to save.

after sadly killing five batches of fish( totaling to 25) and loosing a lot money due to ignorance :)) I think I have a control over what I have started, but my seek for advice is that during the past four weeks I have been experimenting, and learning the hard way, now I ended up with a great couple of molli's (platy) I did a 24 hour cycling only before adding them, but since the main tank (30 ltr) was infected with diseases due to my ignorance, I was advised to disinfect the tank by adding Methylene blue, water dechlorination plus conditioner, and white spot remover, which after reading the things in here I think I killed all the good bacteria, the molli's are doing great and healthy (for the past two days), but in a blue water, I will start gradually changing the water on a 25% / week intervals, but does that mean I will go through the agony of hurting those two molli's like I did to the others or is it okay, and is there any precautions I should take.

regards
MM

Ok firstly may i suggest you do some reading up on beginners stuff.

Nitrogen cycle - New tank syndrome - cycling with fish

There is a lot to learn and you need to have test kits for PH, Ammonia, NitrIte and NitrAte if you are going to successfully cycle with fish.

You say you have only been going 4 weeks, it will take approx 6-8 weeks to fully cycle your tank and the toxic dangers will be around at any time during that period. Methylene Blue when used can also kill off your bacteria that has started to form, so I would say that you should look at your tank as if you had just started out from the beginning. :/

I agree lose the blue and if you are keeping mollies, then add some salt, but also be aware that not all fish like salt, so if you are keeping a brackish tank make sure future fish are suitable for brackish waters.

We all learn from our mistakes and they can be costly financially and emotionally, the best way forward is to read, read, read, as much as you can and get a good understanding of what happens during cycling and therefore be able to understand what is happening in your tank.

Hope the above links help, good luck :cool:
