Marine Tank Of The Month/quarter Or Featured Tank

I am just looking for interest and thoughts. There has been some recent posting in the Suggestion area about restoring a TOTM or FOTM contest. There was cheating in the past and this was discontinued. Input seems to be split with much negativity among the mods. However, I would be curious to see what our section members feel about this in salt. Type away.

I think we should have the tank of the month and an article to go with it on the tank.

I think it would be an OK idea, except for the fact that we don't have a huge amount of people on here. I sure as hell won't be showing my tank again until I get some epoxy... enough said.

I like the idea. Like my fellow early voters, I think the members should nominate/vote on the tanks. I also think though that moderators should have a rarely used "veto" for lack of a better term. Reason being would be to showcase different types of tanks. By that I mean, seeing a different reef tank get voted in every week (as they are quite popular) is cool and all, but seeing the less popular predator/oddity/mantis tank would be nice even if it didn't always get quite as many votes as the reef options. JMO

I would prefer if an article on a particular member was conducted with indepth interview (structured questions) and backed up with pics aka online mag rather than go down this route. If the mods choose an interesting tank, member and do a written piece on that ilk.
You could then have all sorts of cats. beginner of the month etc and encorporate those into the particular headed topics/sections so as interested parties would not have to trawl through different topic to find the one that they are particulary interested in. I think this would be a much better vein to take. Featured articles chosen by the mods.

I'm really up for the idea of having a tank of the month nominated by members. An article should be wrote by the chosen tank owner to accompany the pics and should consist of more of an interview method where each member answers a number of set questions chosen by the mods. Then at the end you could include any additional info the member wishes to state.

All in all its a good idea and hopefully it gets the thumbs up

The only thing about that is I'm not so sure it would offer anything different than their journal...except duded up a bit and summarized. They would also need to have a digital camera for obvious reasons.

That's a good idea. The winner should have to contribute some info and things so it's not just like "pick me 'cause I'm the best".

The tank of the month or a featured tank would be a good idea. They both have plus and minus points. The only issue I see with the featured tank is that some one then has to write an article on their tank. Yes I know they should want to do that after all it is their tank and they should be able to write about it blah blah blah, but not all member will want to do that and it may discourage people from "entering". If you do go down the feature route, it might be an idea to have some sort of standard format that the article should take. Or give a couple of options - a basic template just giving info about the tank and a more full one so people can chose which one they would prefer. Strangley, as hard as it is to believe, not everyone likes talking about themselves.

On the other hand, I agree with Ski, it may encourage member with a not the norm tank such a pred/odd/mantis tank to take part as they would have a chance at being featured.

All member should be able to vote on their favourite otherwise, there will be a accusations against a board of members if they pick the winner.

Plus how would you chose the board of members that would be picking the best picture/tank. You don't even have a board of members yet and you already have people asking if they can go on it. It will be like the "how do i become a mod?" question on the suggestion area.

The only way I can see board members being used to pick TOTM would be to include people such as george farmer and other aquascape experts, but we don't have enough, and as nina said its likely people would disagree with the decisions.

I had to go not sure because you didn't include an "either" option for the first one. I would quite like to see some sort of feature. The advantage over the journal is it will not have pages of thoughts and suggestions along the way, but just a story of the tank(s).

Perhaps it could focus a little more on the members, such as those that have more than one tank?

As to how to decide? I'll leave that up to others. I am apathetic, though not support the idea of a board less then either mod(s) or all members. Creating a sub sect will just help create a clique.

And to hell with what the other mods think, if we have one down here they don't have to get involved. If Other Pets can have an xOTM compo, then so can the salties B)

As to the risk of cheating? So what. Cheaters will be found out if there is a featured article about it, and while they may spoil a month/quarter right now we are letting them spoil it permanently. If other fora can do it, so should we be able to. Did we not (until recently, at least) claim to be the friendlies fish forum around?

Agreed. It would be cool to see an article/feature on a specific tanks, lots of photos of it with loads of set questions answered and lots of information. Or in the case of the people that have multiple tanks more of a feature on teh person as Andy said (there are a few people on here that have some amazing tanks and i would love to see more about how they where setup, how they are run, etc. Maybe it could even go into the TFF newsletter and if the other sections have the same deal then a subforum for TOTM with it maybe split into marine, planted, coldwater(maybe not), Other (not sure "other is the best term but ims sure somneone can think of better names/sections fo rthe big pred tanks or species only type tanks).
