Manzanita in tanks?

Manzanita is pretty straight forward and not a lot of twist and turns like other wood we put in aquariums. So, when positioning a major branch would you place it like just fail in the tank or straight up like it is growing out of ground? Aquascaping question I know!

And yes, Manzanita is great for birds of all sizes as a perch. The varied branch widths are good for their feet.
