Top of the table Feyenoord kept their promotion hopes alive with a 2-1 victory against Dortmund at De kuip in front of 36 514 fans as M Borriello netted a brace to sink the german side and prevent new manager Andy Watson claiming some league points in his first game in charge of the club.
Reading the stats would lead you to believe that it was a fairly one-sided game with Dortmund have 17 shots on goal compared to Feyenoords 7, Dortmund also claimed more shots off goal and possesion.
The first 30minutes was all the home team as they threatened the German sides defense with good passing moves, this resulted in an early goal on the 10 minute mark as M Borriello met a J Vargas cross with a diving header as the ball flew into the bottom corner leaving the Dortmund keeper in no mans land.
Feyenoord kept up their attacking momentum and were rewarded yet again just after the half hour mark when Borriello scored his and his teams second goal of the game and from this point onwards it seemed like it could go on to be a cricket score......But it was not to be as Borussia woke up and started putting their own offensive play to work. The german side had three good chances in the final 10 minutes of the first half and really should have scored on all three occasions.
Half-Time
The first 15 minutes of the second half carried on the way they had ended in the first half with Dortmund coming forward and looking the more threatining side and they pulled one back on the hour mark with new signing david healy scoring a cracker on his debut. The goal was followed by a second blow for Feyenoord as influential Rightback I Castro recieved a straight red for verbal abuse and kicking the ball away from the referee. Now the ball was in Dortmund's court and it really did feel like they could turn the game around.
The german side bombared the Dutch's goal for the remaining half an hour but could not convert and the referee blew the final whistle with Feyenoord running out close 2 -1 victors.
Manager Dan Walmsley said afterward ' Dortmund were very strong away from home and will probably feel they deserve something from the game, i am pleased with the discipline my team showed having gone down to 10 men, i thought the sending off was a deserves and we will miss Castro in our next game against Manchester City which is a very important game in our bid for promotion'
Manager Andy Watson's post match conference
Q: In the first 30 minutes Feyenoord were all over youre defence, and were 2-0 up. How can you explain this to youre loyal fans?
A: Yeh Feyenoord were unstopable in the first 30 minutes, our defence didnt know what to do. I certainly will be having words with them. Totaly unaceptable for a club of this magnitude. Things will be changing!
Q: Towards the last 10 minutes of the first half Dortmund came in the game and then started to looked like a team?
A: Towards the end of the first half we came into the game and started to put Feyenoord under some presure which we then continued into the second half, which finally resulted in our goal! I thought we were unlucky not to score another goal and in the second half we were clearly the better team. I think over the full game we had most of the possesion and something like 17 shots on target to Feyenoords 7.
Q: New signing David Healy, Johan Djourou and Matias Vuoso all played well, whats your opinion on there performance?
A: Yep it was great to see both Johan and Matias both start for us and both looked like promising players. David was fantastic when he finally came on, scoring our only goal.
Q: The Chairmen has generously given you money to spend on players, whos next to arrive at the club?
A: Thats between me and the Chairmen.
Q: And can you sum up your feelings on todays game?
A: Well i believe we deserved to get something from the game. 3 points (shakes his shoulders), at least a point but we were very unlucky. Feyenoord took there chances and that was it. 2-0 down we really shot are self in the foot.
Q: Finally what does the future have in store for Borussia Dortmund?
A: A bright and successful future, with silverware coming back to the club.
