Man vs. Wild

Really. and that worked.
Yea, he made a fire, took some cloth and folded it over inside a metal panel and cooked it over the fire until it carbonized, then he had a piece of charcoal he could spark with a flint and make a fire. Way more hardcore than Bear munching on twinkies with his camera crew after takes.

For those interested, (I don’t know how to link YouTube videos from the app on my phone), you can search survivorman chocolate pop can fire. There’s a 3 minute snippet from the episode that shows how he did it.

Now if I disappear off the forums for a while, I’m looking for and then watching my survivorman DVD’s...

It could be worse. Have you seen the atrocity called "Naked and Afraid"?

I actually met Bear Grylls a few years ago. Very nice guy and he gave me his autograph. I always enjoyed his show, even though a lot of it is just for the shock factor. One of my favorite memes features him, but if I posted it, I'd surely get smacked by Deanasue's iron fisted ban stick.

Heard of it, never could bring myself to watch it

Don't bother. It's the same exact scripted drama you'd expect from a trashy reality show (Jersey Shore, Real Housewives, Honey Boo Boo, etc), only it's a "survival" show where they leave you naked with another person to "survive".

I think real survival stories are fascinating. Anybody on here ever read "Deep Survival" by Gonzales? One of my favorite books. Some of you would really enjoy it.

I never saw it because I didn't have a TV back then, but back when I was in college my brother told me he saw a short-lived game show, I think it was just called "Lost" (not the fantasy show of the same name; that came later). They would drop a teams of two contestants in an unknown (to them) location somewhere in the world, with some basic camping gear, a couple MREs, and a camera man. First team to make it to the Statue of Liberty won the prize.

My brother called me after seeing an episode and told me about it. He said it sounded like something I would do on spring break.

Not that I have any time to add a show like that anyways, but thanks for the heads up, I’ll add it to the do NOT watch list

Never heard of it. There’s another cheesy show from up here in the north, I think it was called man hunter or man vs tracker, similar concept, except it was a team of two that were dropped and had to make it to a check point before being captured by the tracker.

His name is Les Stroud, and he actually survives the situations he put himself into.

I know it was less flashy, but not only did he survive his situations, he also did all of his own filming, which meant he would hike a distance, setup up his camera gear, hike back to his original position so he could get footage of himself walking towards the camera. Surviving TWICE.

He also distilled his own pee without drinking it directly. AND, AND, I saw him* make a fire with a piece of chocolate and a pop can... survivorman all the way

*edit=autocorrect typo
I had always figured that surviving twice thing was a bit of "Hollywood Magic", but if that's true he really was quite impressive.

A lot of the wilderness and hunting videos on youtube are done that way. It's part of the reason I never video my hunts--I just don't want to work that hard. (The other reason is I'm a fairly inept hunter, and I don't think anyone wants to watch videos of me blowing stalks, missing easy shots, and taking naps)
