i have a male platy which ive had for about a month now,
he jumped out of the tank the 2nd day at his new home because of a blue gourami chasing him around, and on the 3rd day i noticed his tail was almost completely gone (the gourami didnt eat it because i returnd the gouramis that same day)

so since then ive been puting 5ml of melafix in the tank everyday and doing a 30% water change at the end of every week
yet the tail still hasnt grown back
there used to be a white outline at the very end of the tail but now its gone

so im asking for ANY suggestions on what i should do to help recover his tail, because he is having a hard time swiming using only his tail like the other 2 female paltys do

Well, first you should post this in the emergency forum. ;) But if you have a spare tank he should go in there. Is the tank new? Check your water stats for ammonia, nitrite, or nitrate. I personally use Maracyn as for fin rot because it's simple and easy. A water change may be taking out good bacteria and the melafix. Try this: When doing water changes add Stress Coat to it before putting it into the tank. That should work well with Melafix or Maracyn. (Don't use Melafix and Maracyn together) And sometimes it does help to change 30% a week to 10% every half week but that's a preference some people have and others don't. :D

the tank is 2 months old
amonia=0
nitrites=0
i dont have a nitrate test yet, but i'll have it tested at the lfs today
ive also tried the stress coat thing but doesnt seem to show any positive results after a week of doing it
its not a big emergency because the fish still seems health besides the finrot but i do want to help recover the fin

i'll post a pic of it once i find my camera

50% water changes daily for a week, then every other day for the second week. Melafix does help, fresh water helps just as much if not more.

i did a 30% water change yesterday and his tail was half white this morning
and then about an hour ago he passed away :rip:

the 2 female platys i have left seem healthy but are swiming near the top of the tank towards the back corner
which is unusual because they are usually very active and swim near the front middle of the tank
i hope they dont die, i checked the water stats and they are still at 0 for ammonia and nitrites

i think what caused the death was my broken heater which broke overnight, it heated up like crazy and then the protection thing kicked in and cut it off
it melted the suction cup that holds the heater in place i still cant figure out how it would have over heated since i turned it off last night, i guess there is sill current going through it even when the dial is set to 0, and the internal resistor couldnt take it anymore and just gave up
the water temp was at 75F when i check early this morning so maybe it rapidly heated and the protection shut it off, but when i took it out of the water it started smoking

i'll wait a few days and go buy some guppies

the heater is an Aquatic Gardens 50watt profile heater
i do NOT recomend anyone buy this piece of crap that only lasted 3 weeks, and has no warranty even though the instructions that come with it say "warranty" there really is NO warranty information or any phone number to call for questions
it was the cheapest ive seen and by far the lowest quality,
unfortunately i didnt read the reviews on it and ended up losing a fish

check that out for info on it

Sorry for your loss but it sounded like you were doing the right things. It was just unfortunate series of events that occured. :no:

yea, ive been doing everything that i could think of to restore his health but i guess it was just meant for him to die

im gona try to find some info on that heater company and have them replace my broken heater or i'll just return it to the store and buy a better one
gona give my 2 female platys a few days before i add anything else to the tank because im also thinking about switching from gravel to sand

o S*** one of my female platys just died
i dont know what to do anymore
hopefully the last one will still be alive tomorrow, and i'll put it in a new tank of fresh water

just checked the tank a minute ago and the platy which i thought was dead is actually alive
i saw her zipping around with the 2 otos probably searching for something to eat

i thought she was dead cuz she was there sitting at the very bottom of the tank in the artificial plant
but i left her in there just incase she wasnt dead and surely enough shes alive and well(i hope)
