made up my mind

Oh, you're welcome! :)

I kind of do systematic checkover when I buy Livebearers. I'll post what I do and what I look for...feel free to ignore it though! :p

Body: Any healthy live-bearer's abdomen should look convex (slightly), when viewed in a profile. They should appear well-fed. Be careful of fish with protuding scales, and bloated bellies! Most times, these fish are incurable. A large head, that looks disproportionate to it's body, is usually a sign the fish has undergone long hunger periods. Doesn't mean it will die, but I would not reccommend buying him..

Gills: Healthy fish breathe slowly, although they breathe somewhat faster in a densely populated tank. As the fish breathe, they expose the gill cover. This should appear a pale reddish color, in healthy fish.

Fins: Missing or partially developed fins are ALWAYS a bad signal. Frayed edges on the fin, are usually the sign of a disease, although there may be other causes (Liiiike...nipping from other Guppies!) In a healthy fish, the fins should visably stick out from the body. A fish that clamps it's fins, and maybe rocks from side to side is definatly not feeling well, and may easily get a disease.

Eyes: The eyes should appear clear, and never protrude un-natuarally from the head.

Skin: The skin should not show any white spots, mold, fungus, or white film. The scales should hug the body, and look smooth. Be sure to examine the tip of the mouth with extra care, to be sure there is no white film.

Yep, Ember and Apollo are going to be the first ones in that tank. I am setting this tank up for them, my parents forbid me from having ANY more fish, so of course I am getting more...
once I convinced them it was for the good of the fish, maybe the fish 'need' a 2,000 gallon tank too.

Oh, yep...I DEFINITELY think Guppies need 2,000 gallons...they'll have more room to swim, and stretch their fins. And who could resist that face..it practically SAYS "I want a 2,000 gallon...plwwweeeease mommy?" and "If we do get that tank, Ember and I promise not to fight...we'll be good. You won't even have to bribe us with Bloodworms...pleeeeease?"

:p

:p Well, after calling almost every lfs in the area, no one has HEARD of bio spira. I will try a few more sort of local fs's then go for the big guns, ordering online for an overnight delivery. (so I ake sure the bacteria stays cold) Thanks again for your help!

Btw, nice mini in your sig. Do you ride?

Yup yup! I ride a lot. :p Also do Equestrian Vaulting. :)

Thanks for the compliment on the horse. He's actually not mine, but one of the grand sires for my little Mini. His name is Casino.

Bio-Spira can be hard to find...and usually once you find it in the LFS, it has already been exposed to high temperatures, so the bacteria may be dead already. Sounds like a good idea to get it shipped to you, though. :D

Very cool, I ride too! I do showjumping.

I put ember and apollo in the 10 gallon. They are happy again. Got ahold of some bio spira, from a reputable place the dealer (marineland) recommended. I will be adding the rest of the boys saturday, when my parents will be able to pick them up for me.

Thanks for all your help!

Oooh, showjumping! I used to that...but then I fell off a few times with a green horse, and kind of chickened out on that. Trying to get back into it though!

Sounds great with Ember and Apollo. You'll have to post pictures of them and the tank, because now I'm very curious to see these boys I've heard so much about!

And yay with the BioSpira!

i will take some pictures today I hope. I would love to show them to you, since you helped them out so much! They are LOVING all the room, and today had some bloodworms. This weekend I will pop 3 new guys in my quarantine tank and put them in in a week.

I'm glad I helped them so much! I absolutely love helping people and fish. :D

I'm sure they are loving the room! They have a nice big house, now. :) When you first put the new guys in, you can expect some chasing, maybe a little nipping. No fish in that tank is going to have perfect fins...so don't worry if you see a little nipping. It's totally normal.

Best of luck!

Just to provide another data point, I have a 10-gallon w/male guppies. Started with 4, now there are 5. They play together in the filter current, and get along great. There's a bit of chasing, but no nipping, and generally look happy and healthy. One of them is a shrimp killer, but I don't know which one... It's a colorful and fun little tank - I think you'll enjoy yours!

Stacey

Thanks Stacey.

The two I have now seem to really enjoy being together. They only pick when its feeding time, and they both are sure they can eat all of it, with no help to the other one :p
