I bought a peppermint shrimp from petco yesterday. It died on the way home in the bag. I went straight home. I put the body in a plastic baggie and put him in the freezer. I get ready to leave to take him back today. I grabbed the receipt and happen to look at the back. It says, under aquatic life, "We do not refund saltwater animals".

I couldn't believe my eyes!!! This shrimp died on the way home. He didn't even make it home alive, much less into my tank. I had never even heard of a store that doesn't offer at least some guarantee for ALL their fish, including SW!!! That makes me SOOO mad!! No one told me that there was no guarantee on these fish when I bought them. If they did tell me I never would have gotten it. Not in a million years!! Thank God I only bought a $8 shrimp and not one of their $100 tangs.

The place I buy my saltwater fish from they guarantee 24 Hours, and if they die you get a store credit.

Out of the 5 lfs I have by me only one of them has a 24hour return if it dies.

hrmm, most petco fish arent healthy from the start  thats why you support local fish stores to help your area. it might be a little more, but you get more variety and they are a lot heathier than chain stores most of the time. sorry for your loss though

While some will say a Petco near them is reliable, my first (and LAST) marine fish experience was with Petco. I purchased 2 fish and a skunk cleaner from a single Petco tank and both fish died within 48 hours. Luckily, the skunk cleaner survived and is healthy. I went back to the store and got a sample of their water and the salinity was 1.018, but I waited 4 weeks anyway after this purchase to insure no parasites were in my tank! Since then, I've watched their tanks and fish in them have had ick and a myriad of other problems. Lesson learned: Buy nothing live from Petco (not to mention adding inhabitants one at a time, rookie mistake).

One of the stores near me treats all fish that come in with copper and places an arrival date on new fish. While they do not refuse to sell new arrivals, they recommend waiting a period of time before buying them. I have 2 reputable stores to buy from and have not suffered a loss of either fish or coral since then (knock on wood). Some stores will even let you purchase a fish and leave it in the store for a waiting period to insure that it is healthy. If the fish dies, you can at least get a store credit towards another purchase. Bottom line: Find a reputable lfs and the return policy should not be an issue.

Sorry for your loss.

i have never in my life even heard of petco offering marine fish?? all the ones i've ever seen (seen about 20 of them) have only offered freshwater, and even that selection isnt great.

There are 3 petcos in my surrounding area, 2 of them have takin the salt water tanks out! only 1 now that has them by me.

I have a very limited amount of pet stores in our area. Even less than that sell SW fish/inverts. I do have one store me that is independant. They are great. I can't afford have their fish though. I bought a damsel from them last week. It was doing great and than it disappeared. I looked all around the outside of the tank and the insite, can't find him anywhere and it's only a 5 gallon tank.
