Just wanted to share my thoughts on my new Fluval U4 filter.

I have a 550 L tank. 4w x 2.5h x 2d feet.
It contains 25 cherry shrimp (more being born soon), about 30 tetras like neons, and one 12" pleco.
Some plants.

I used to have a Fluval FX5 external filter, which is really made for a 1500 L tank. But I had concerns about shrimp being sucked in. Tried to cover the intake with foam and pantyhose, but it was clogging up so fast.

So I took the plunge to replace my FX5 with an internal Fluval U4 - a gamble I thought.

I LOVE IT!!!!!!

The U4 is only rated for a 240 L tank. Yet it's so powerful! I think it is seriously underrated, it is very powerful. The output is very fast so I even had to turn the dial at the top to reduce the power. It moves all the water around the tank (and it's pretty large tank). It's VERY easy to clean and it actually doesn't get clogged up that quickly either. I clean it once every two months. I used to clean the FX5 massive external every 3 months so it's not far off.

Even when I clean it, there's not too much dirt in there, just a general amount. And the water stays crystal clear. I do change 25% water every 3 weeks though to keep it fresh.

Also, the U4 internal filter keeps the sponge inside very close to the inside walls of the filter housing, so if any baby shrimp get close, they shouldn't get sucked in at all. It's perfect! Babies tend to stay in the plants and wood anyway so I'm not too worried about them. When they start swimming around when they're a bit larger, I certainly don't have to worry about them getting into the U4.

So to anyone thinking the U4 is too small and not powerful for a large tank like mine, it's brilliant! So easy and cheap to clean and maintain, and perfectly safe with shrimp, especially when you have babies in the tank.

Maybe this will help someone.

Here's a pic of my tank. I've highlighted the filter size and position. It's hard to see against the black background. I would never go back to an external now for this tank, this is a perfect filter. It also gives lots of air, although with the air it's a little loud so I reduced the air amount with the control at the top.

By the way, I can't plant my tank properly because the big pleco (bottom right) uproots them...

I have 3 x U4 in 3 of my tanks, yes they are powerful, when I got my third one it was easy to get established because all I did was take a cartridge out of my other to get it going.

Edited to add, I hope you took the ceramic out of the plastic bag in the middle one lol, also I took out the carbon too.

I have 3 fluvals too, one U4 and two U2, really pleased with them and I had to use recently a smaller U2 in a shrimp tank and it seems perfectly safe for them due to the design. I wouldn't be brave enough to trust it in a tank that size as the sole filter but one has to try.

Yup, love the design of it, so easy to open and clean. I also shoved a piece of old filter sponge from my FX5 to help seed the bacteria into this one. All fish happy two months since I got it!

hi i dont mean to hi jack a other members post or that but after reading reviews on this fluval4 i like it but i have a question see what anyone thinks? i am setting up a 4ft planted tank just now it has a fluval 305 external filter but what do u guys think off idea me also putting in a fluval4 in tank as well to help circulate water would that be a good idea also would the filter manage circulate the water in my tank ...thanks if u guys can help me

A lot of people use 2 filters, some say extra filteration isn't a bad thing. I have 360Liter as one of my tanks and I use the U4 plus another cheaper model for for extra filtering.

ok thanks alot so u think be no problem do u think that will be enough to circulate my water round the tank aswell thanks again ..and apoligise for asking on someone elses thread sorry
