Losing Guppys

I'm pretty sure from your posts that your tank is not cycled fully. Unless you put the old SPONGES from your old filter iun to your new one the bactria will not have transferred. Being you have 0 nirite and 0 amonia, that's good but 0 nirAte means the tank isn't cycling fully. Your fish could be suffering Amonia Poisoning and hence them dying. Have a look at the New tank section on here, it should answer questions. I wouldn't add anymore fish until you see some nirate in your tank xx Sorry for your loses xx :(

Yea, I would put money on a non cycled fish tank.

Hey

Thanks for your replies.

I don't know how i could of put the cartridge media into this new one, it wouldn't fit.

Is there any tips on how i can try and keep the other fish alive? daily water changes?

Eh? 0 ammonia & nitrite & nitrate. But there's fish. A tank with fish can't have 0ppm for ammo & nitrite and nitrate, unless it is seriously heavily planted. An uncycled filter would show a reading for either ammonia or nitrite.

It does sound like an uncycled filter to me, but also something is wrong with the tests or testing procedure.

Mark, are you using liquid tests, or paper strips?

So it IS a brand new filter? Definitely sounds like ammo or nitrite poisoning, but after 3-4 weeks, you would expect to see some bacterial growth, and in any case, most tap water has some nitrate in it anyway, so I stand by my earlier statement that there is also something wrong with the tests or testing procedure too.

Hey

I use the API liquid tests. Ammonia, Nitrate and nitrite was the lowest color (0).

The filter was installed about a month ago, the fish shop said to bring a water sample in when i take the dead one back Saturday, i was thinking perhaps it was the fish i'd purchased, but before i added these i'd lost 2 guppys....

If i stop adding new fish, wont the male gupps get stressed with a female?

did you keep your old filter media? just try and shove it in the new one, my old filter is completely different to my new one, i just made them fit!

thats a shame, do you know anyone with a tank that might give you some? maybe ask at the fish shop?

If i had kept the media, wouldnt it need to be wet? It would of dried up by now.

if you have more males than females then its the poor female thats going to suffer, she'll be constantly raped poor girl, but in answer to your question, yes, alot of water changes are your only option, with regards to your testing, is your kit out of date, are you shaking the bottles vigorously, following the instuctions? i ask because like the lock man says, somethings not right with your results, its dosnt match the symptoms you describe

Hello

I have no females...

The API kit was purchased in May this year so is in date and i have shook the bottle and then the tubes like i would do with anything. I am dreading going back after work!

Considering this further, we've got a couple of possible scenarios.

What seems to fit best is that the filter, being 3-4 weeks old has now cycled itself, hence the Double Zeros on ammo and nitrite, and that the 0 nitrate is down to the test not having been shaken properly. Mark, with the API nitrate test, IIRC it's bottle no.2 that has to be seriously shaken - it says 30 seconds in the instructions, double that, hit the bottle on a table a few times. There is a powder held in solution in the liquid, and this can (especially if it's not been used for a while) precipitate out of solution. That powder has to be completely dissolved, as that is what gives the colour reading. The fish have been showing a delayed reaction to the ammonia and nitrite, and only just started dying.

My issue with this scenario is that 3-4 weeks is a little quick for a fishless cycle, especially one where the ammonia levels are likely to have been rather high, which would encourage the wrong bacteria to grow.

The other scenario is that all the tests are iffy (as Phoenix says, is there an expiry date on the tests?) and they are all showing false zeros.

It's certainly an odd one.

Hi

When i get home i will check the expiry dates and do as you say for the nitrate test, i will also re-do the ammonia and nitrite tests making sure i shake the bottles loads.

Thanks
