So saturday my momma lobster came out from under her rock and walked across the tank a gaggle of babys crawled around under her raised claws and angry stares at my fish. They then crawled back on the mommy bus and went back to the cave. Sunday night she came out and did not have a single baby on her. We were horribly concerned she may have gotten munchy However my daughter found the babys today hiding in the baby grass that we have in the tank for the live bearer fry I have no idea how many have made it but I am going to add extra baby grass to give them more safe domain and hopefully I still have about 20. they are hard to find as they are the size of a pencil lead and so dark a blue they are almost black.

Would love to see some pics if you got any :D

Getting pics is almost imposible at this point I moved my extra baby grass from the back of my tank to the bottom to give em a bigger safe area. I have found them all over the place in the tank so far though. I will be taking momma out of that tank soon as after the babys came she has an aggressive streak she was lacking before. She nom nomed one of my female guppys last night. It was the first fish she has ever gone for, before it was my male taking down the fish. but I want to give her a chance to molt before she joins my male in the 29 gallon (andm I am gonna add a ton more rocks and plants to that tank for both of thier sakes.

OMG you dont know funny till ya see two 8th of an inch lobstrs try to jump on a quarter inch guppy from opposite sides and get bucked like fleas rofl.

Couple pics cant see overly well but ya can make em out

they are hard to spot but I centered all of em as well as I could.

lol they look like powder blue shrimps.....well i suppose they kinda are...except their crayfish hahaha. Ps: Im going to be making my 20 gallon tall a crayfish tank, any species reccomendations to a fellow crayfish (rather soon to be) keeper?

I am no expert on them by any means but I would say if its a tall tank give em things to climb. Mine like space to move around and and talls of course have less floor space. I personally like just about all the crayfish I have seen so far.

I recomend checking out asian tiger lobsters if you want something intersting color wise as they are stripped and have multiple colors and look downright badass. Crayfish come in just about every color though. Check out tangerines, electric blues, there are white ones that are a different color morph of my blues. Those are the ones I have seen in pet stores. I have seen ones that people have caught in the wild of just about every color you can think of. I would advise checking out the aggression lvl on what ever you decide to go with. Mine are procambrius alleni and are apparently one of the only breeds that will kill one another for sport... I do feel that they are one of the more appealing breeds with how deep a shade of blue thier color can get.

I definately wish you luck with them. I feel once you have them it takes a special fish to spark your interest compared to the activity and antics of a cray :).

i am new 2 all this, just got my first tropical tank , i have 8 marygold platy's 9 guppys and 3 gourami's and 2 grey fish wit red tail and top fin but i dont know wot they r. they r the same shape an size as a cardinal tetra.....but any way, could i put a lobster r 2 in with them? how big would ur average lobster grow? my tank is 4ft long.

could do with knowing what 'make, the Crayfish is.

you will need to remove the babys. mum will soon start to eat them, but they will also eat each other. so you will need several tanks, over time, if you wish to keep em. if you whish we can go further into their care, just ask

recommendation is, partly, down to where you live. if you are from the UK, you can only keep one type of Crayfish, the Australian redclaw Cherax quadricarinatus.

I lost very few lobsters to cannabilism. I dropped of the first batch of 40 at my lfs. I have abou 60- 100 more from the hatch its seems I Guessed way wrong on how many I had as I still had tons of very small ones that had not started growing yet.

As for putting crayfish in with fish. Its hit or miss Some seem to realy enjoy killign and eating your fish others just seem to ignore them. IE my male will try to kill anything that he can reach. My female allows the momma guppys to rest on her back while having babys and the male fish tend to stay away. (couldnt beleive taht the first time I saw it. Size depends on species the ones I have I am told can get between 8 and 10 inches.

I've seen Redclaw (cherx Quad's) at over 14 inch nose to tail. seen one over 900g .. size is not only species dependent. environmental variables affect it too.

Good to know. by the end of the week I intend to have a 55 gallon that has a lot of rocks dedicated only to my adult lobsters With my male and female blue and I may get a male and female white or orange as well since I will have a 29 on standby for molting/eggs to keep them safe when vulnerable. Maybe it will let them grow more :)

to give you more information, we need to know exactly which Crayfish you have. can you post a picture? or can you look on google images and try and post your id from that? it is quite important, as crays can have differing requirements.
