Loaches - Are They Crazy?

I am not disputing that they may be around again. I simply stated that they are a threatened species, (Red List Page), I had not seen them for a while, and last time I did, they were about £15.00 each. At last assessment, they were classified as CR A1c which means critically endangered with at least an 80% population loss in the last 10 years due to a decline in area of occupancy, extent of occurrence and/or quality of habitat.

Sue:

As you seem to have worked out already, the picture isn't the greatest aid! Guinness glasses are best used for Guinness, or better, a decent real ale.

I was very surprised to see them listed openly on the Web by a known mail-order firm....I'd think there are some restrictions on a threatened species...

Is it possible that these fish are now being farmed?

I know 3 places where I can get them (£3.75/£6.99/£7)... surely and endangered species would not be this readily available and at such low(ish) prices...

I also found some B. sidthimunki online and they were $19.99 US Dollars a piece, plus shipping. Thats a lot of money for a loach.

Well, I still have this unknown loach. It's happy enough I think. I am ordering some more to go with him, but to be honest, I don't think he was more then £1 or so....they do tend to cut us a good deal so it's hard to know exactly how much who was but he wasn't expensive.

I have noticed that psycho loach changes colour for no reason. Sometimes he has a dark stripe down his side, sometimes he has very distinct squares along his sides. This is just when he's sitting around being loachy, not when there is anything going on or any stress that we can see.

He has not been beer glassed again, but I have tried many more pics and can't get a single decent one of him.

I'll just have to love him for who he is (or might be).

hi,

Have you looked on www.loaches.com there is a full loach list with pics. You said it was stuck to the glass? Dwarfs don't have sucker mouths so that seems a bit odd. Mine spend all day chasing each other all over the tank so that sounds normal.

Emma :)
