I own both a mountain horned dragon and a bearded dragon.
Both are tame. My MHD seems to like to wander more then my BD does. I think my MHD seems to have become very lazy when it comes to feeding as it likes to only be hand fed
.
Problem with lizards (not gecko's) is that they have claws, and they are SHARP. Both lizards like to shred my hand when i attempt to put them back in there cages and they wish to stay out more.
Lizards are relatively inexpensive to get setup and all and keep alive.
One word of advice, find a vet in your area that specializes in reptiles. You will need him at some point. If you dare to get a lizard from a petstore unless it's captive bred (even then) you should immediatly take him to a vet.
My vet told me he use to see MHD's all the time back in the 70's/80's, and people would bring them in one day and they would be dead the next. Amazingly enough i have had mine alive (in relatively good health) for like 3-4 years now. He was amazed at that.
Like all wild caught ones in pet stores are just caught and thrown in cages and shipped here and then put on display. They are not checked for parasites at all. Online stores and like expo's and stuff lizards are in much better shape/health.
If you have seen that new jeep commereical with the lizard that puffs up at the jeep then runs off. That's what i have, thats a BD. They will do that if they get really mad.
Lights. Yes they need heat lamps and bulbs that generate UVB/UVA light for them. Pet stores sell them, and there not hard to come by. Some offer heat lamps that also contain UVB/UVA, some just contain UVB/UVA and don't get hot thus you need a seperate lamp for heat.
Anyways, look around at lizards. Both of mine have been impulsive buys, but they turned out good.
Another word of advice that was costly too me, is that my MHD which is a smalle(er) typed lizard, i got her a UVB/UVA flourescent typed looking tube lamp. Well the thing it the tube sits in was covered by a plastic thing. UVB/UVA rays CANNONT penetrate plastic. I not knowing this let the light run like that for 4-5 months, and my lizard wasn't getting any of those rays which cause bone growth and strength. My lizard ended up with both front legs broke. As in they were split in half. I didn't notice this, because i picke her up and she didn't make any noises. I picked up on the limp and we took her in to get it looked at. Took her back the next week and her other leg was broke. Gave her medicine and took that plastic piece off and she got better.
But if there is any plastic in front of the UVB/UVA rays REMOVE it or it will cause there bones to become brittle and break very easily.
Yeah that's all i got for now.
