Got a bunch of live rock from a friend who tore down his salt tank, I guess he got tired of killing stuff.

Question is, if it's dried out, should I let it sit in another seasoned tank for a while before adding it to mine? I'm sure it's OK other than having been dried out for a few weeks. My worry is that dryness doesn't bode well for the anaerobic bacteria flora and maybe adding it to the tank as-is would be a problem.

Curing it in a seasoned holding tank first seems like a good idea. Is my reasoning wrong?

Adding the dried out LR will in a already set-up/mature system will cause a rise in and ammonia and nitrite levels due to all the die-off and will thus cause the tank to cycle again so is not recommended as it will highly stress if not kill most/all the livestcok in the tank. In this case you would defo have to cure the LR in another tank or container containing saltwater and a powerhead (for water movement and helping remove all the die-off) first. The rock should be checked upon regularly and once all params reach 0 then the rock can be added to the established system and should not cause a problem! ;)

However if you wish to add the LR in a new set-up without any livestock inside it, then it wont be a problem to add the LR straight in as it will help cycle the tank and wont cause any harm to anything! :good:
