Live food for dummies

That’s not a bloodworm, although it’s probably related. Bloodworms are solid bright red. There’s quite a few larvae that look similar but not as red.
Fish like them anyhow :dunno:

Any ideas what they could be? I get them too. I also get some white worm looking things. They're all fish food but I'm curious.

So I have lots of white strands of I assume Snow White mold??? ( looks like webbing, but the boxes are sealed, with coffee filters over the holes in the covers ) In both my worm box’s…assuming it was too wet around the bread, with the yeast flakes stuck to it…. Will have to pull things apart, after church this morning, and see if my worms are ok… grindel and white

White cotton fungus in both worm boxes… Grendal worms much much more cotton fungus pulled it all off the top, and turned over the soil…. Everything under looks normal, but I didn’t see any grindal worms ( yes, I know they are pretty small )… way less cotton fungus m the white worm box… pulled it up and turned over the dirt.. quite a few white worms in there… put a couple small piles of nutritional yeast flakes for feed, without the bread this time… keeping an eye on both… got quite a few white worms… not too sure on the grindal worms

I'll say this for the grindal worms and baby brine shrimp. They are prolific. Especially the grindals. I usually end up with more than I need. No point in freezing them since I cultivate them indoors so I'll have them all year round. At least I can add fewer bbs eggs to the hatchery so that I don't have as much excess there.

Think my grindals are done... but I think my white worms are thriving... don't think they liked the organic dirt I put in their boxes...

we have pretty black soil around here, & we have pocket gophers in the driveway ditch... may try some of that... it's the most perfect soil for planting... thinking the worms will like it

I did one culture in coconut fiber and one in peat moss. Mine do well in both.

put some coco media blocks in my watch list... we'll see how things go the next couple days

Your guess is as good as mine. If you click on them in this link (picture) it shows you them in more detail. There are soooooooooooooo many species… this is just a few…

I've been getting a lot of spotted lanternflies that end up in my mosquito bins. You're supposed to kill them on site so if they aren't drowned already, I take them out and step on them. I was thinking at first that the red worm things could be their larvae. Lately they've been a much deeper red. So I think they are actually bloodworms.

Upon doing some research, I think those actually are bloodworms. Bloodworms are midge fly larvae. The red comes from hemoglobin and they can vary in color sometimes. Some of them are even white.

I kind of forgot about my vinegar eel cultures. When I thought of it, I did the thing of pouring some of the culture into a bottle with a long neck up to the bottom of the neck, putting some bio floss in the neck and then pouring fresh water on top. I looked and saw that there were some in the bottle neck. I harvested some today. I don't know what I was expecting but they're too small. I put some in the tank and the fish barely noticed them. They would be a good live food for fry but I don't think they'll work for me.
