Live food for dummies

I'd like to try the fruit flies too...I had a lot of mosquito larvae and at one point over the summer I was feeding them twice a day every day! And that was just from the one tub. I tried growing out baby brine shrimp but the culture kept crashing after about 3-4 days, I'd like to keep trying at some point after a bit more research
flightless fruit flies are a great food I feed mine on banana and ready Brek , i also put into a freezer ready to be used at another time

Rotifers are another live food that you can culture in the same way as Daphnia. They come in a range of sizes and you can order rotifer cysts online. Then hatch them out in green water and a month later you have thousands of them.

I think I'll do two 5 gallon tanks for daphnia cultures. I hear they crash a lot so at least I'd have one going that I could use to restart the other.

The bigger the Daphnia cultures, the more stable they are. Anything less than 40-50 litres is unstable and more likely to crash. If you can use 200 litre plastic storage containers or bigger, they are much better.

Interesting thanks Colin @rebe

Good to know. I have space considerations though

Anyone ever tried this @rebe

Hello @Colin_T was it you that mentioned "rotifers"? Are they a good alternative to Daphnia? I'm looking into things that would fit into my small Bentosi Tetra mouths!

And @CaptainBarnicles are you planning to start a live fish food farm up there? If so, can I get on the mailing list?

I'm not planning on it 😅 just trying out the live foods as it's something I'm pretty new to. The mozzies did well over the summer, my rainbows enjoyed them immensely! I noticed a huge change in them from colour and behaviour to general health and wellbeing. I really like the idea of fresh, live foods. I really wanted to grow out brine shrimp but I just can't seem to get it right...so that's going to go on the back burner for a bit....I'm still waiting for these grindal worms to show up, I'm hoping they'll do well. Daphnia cysts don't seem to be a thing here in the UK, we have to import them in...but I wonder if I'll be able to get those going too...a continuous source of live food sounds pretty good to me!

Me too! I've never tried raising live food before. I am sure between us, there must be one we can get right! I'm debating which one to start with as my first attempt :)

Rotifers are good food and come in a range of sizes from tiny (a couple of micron) suitable for newly hatched labyrinth fry, to 1/2 inch. Most are small and make great food for small fish.
