Live Cam - Angels Mating...march 9, 2015, 9:15 Pm Est

I'll get your pair to have a word with em if they don't lol

If you really want to get fry Set up a breeding tank. Just a bear tank with nothing in it but a place to lay the eggs. Than when they lay the eggs watch the pair remove the one that is not careing for the eggs. I had a breeding pair and the mother was AMAZING! she would even collect the fry and put them all in the conner at night it was so cute.

It depends on the pair. I know what it takes to breed them but I don't think it is worth the extra time and money to do it. I have 8 small really nice angels that I bought from a breeder on the way. A part of me wants to breed them and the other part of me screams DON"T EVEN THING ABOUT IT!!

It's fun but a lot of work in the end.

Snowflake - I do not have the tanks to breed angels. I just find it interesting to watch the process. I assume even if I get to the fry stage that they will be eaten by the community fish eventually. But I do have a lot of java moss that would provide good cover.

I did not witness the mating 2 days ago, but happened to be walking by the next day when the tank light came on. As soon as the light came on I saw a leaf covered in eggs, but both angels immediately started eating them.

Updated log:
Mated 2/26, eggs eaten 20 minutes later
Mated 3/9, eggs eaten 3/10
Mated 3/19, eggs eaten 3/20
Mated 3/29, wrigglers disappeared 4/1 (male guarding most of the time)
Mated 4/7, eggs eaten the same night (female guarding)
Mated 4/18, eggs eaten 4/19

my male eats the eggs when the lights go off. I wonder if the lighting has something to do with it .... hmm  interesting

In my tank the angels seem to panic when the lights go on...that seems to be one of the 'egg eating' triggers.

could it be a security thing? they feel insecure and so eat their eggs

I wonder if having the lights go on more gradually - mimicking nature - would be more effective.

Many fish will eat their own eggs before they allow something else to do so. In order to get angel fry from spawns in a community tank I had to pull the eggs and hatch them in a dedicated tank. When I did this I ended up with 100s of fry and could not deal with them.

I think my tank is just too crowded for the angels to feel safe enough to allow the eggs to develop. And, yes, the lights coming on makes it worse. I suppose next time they mate I could leave the light off for a couple days and see if that helps. I don't really have a gradual light option at this point.
