I was wondering what the minimal light requirements for gsp and a kenya tree where. my tank is 24x12x20, I have the base light that came with the tank and a 14 watt light that i bought. I will be upgrading the lighting soon i just dont know to what, any ideas?

For the life of me, I can't figure out what a GSP is lol.

or Green Star Polyps ;)

Minimum would be a couple of T8s, however, I would more than recommended some power compact T5s.

lol I have green star polyps in my tank

+1 to T5's. Anything below that will limit what other corals you can keep and will be pretty lack lustre above your tank.

ha i wondered if i should of spelled out green star polyps, but is there any lighting fixtures you would recommend that wont break the bank? Is there any certain wattage i should look at too, like the 3-5 watt per gal.

Power compact T5s aren't TOO expensive. If you go that root get a fixture with two bulbs. Even better, try to find a fixture with two separate reflectors (I don't know any companies that have separate reflectors off-hand). For a 24" tank, each PC bulb should be 55/65 watts. Get one 10K daylight bulb and one actinic bulb.

Whats your budget, there are some nifty metal halide units around at the moment for the smaller tank - cost around £80 and Ak has a great cheap mh solution - which i'm sure he will post :good:

Well i was looking to spend around $150. The pet store around me has a decent offer going on where i get 30% off a light fixture, so i has thinking of getting this clickie for like $160. But would i really need a metal halide light if my tank is on 20 inches deep, i thought they were only for deeper tanks. Which would you pefer a MH or a T5?

That is a beauty of a light... and quite a steal for $160!
With that unit your options will be plentiful, I'd go for it personally :good:

ok im thinking i will, thanks for all your help :)... but im sure i will have other questions ;)

Nemo, thats Australian dollers not US. Was curious so looked to see how much it was:

Its about 148 dollers and about £88 british pounds - looks like a good buy to me as well :good:

Although, you could get a metal halide clip on for that price and then you could keep anything you wanted

Seffie, could you post a link or something to these MH you're speaking of?

Hi nemo

they were on ebay last time I looked but remember someone on here bought one, thats how they came to light  excuse pun in the first place - but AK was suggesting an even cheaper alternative of using garden/shed (water proof) halides and when he was showing them I think they were even cheaper, something like £35 :good:

If I was going to have a nano again its certainly something I would investigate if I was going to keep sps
