USA,
I went to an lfs, or lps the other day. It was the most expensive thing Ive ever been to.

Assorted African Cichlids
$15 each
2 for 50

Medium Angelfish
$30 each

Supper Guppies (???)
$6.99 each

etc.

It was such a rip off! I could get 3 cichlids for the price of one at my lfs! And they sell those angelfish that they had for 3.45 at petco and 6.99 some were else. They did have cheap tanks though.

37 gallon with stand and hood and light for $137.

Yah, there is a store here that overprices their fish. For example: 3" Jack Dempsey for $25.00 Hmmmmmmm let me think............NO

Dang  ...... thats a freaking bust. I would tell the owner let me get one of those and those and those, then when he says okay, your told is 86.99, I would just laugh and walk out of the store.

One of my lfs charges $9 for panda corys. And yes, I bought two :X The one 5 minutes away from this charges $2.50 for them.

The plants are also overpriced. $14 for anubias, when a nearby lfs charges $4.

As far as I am concerned, it is a life and it is worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it.
well said cheese... We've Just got the 4th Chocolate zebra plec home... £115 later :D

It like most things.. look around and you'll find cheaper places. I'm lookinng to get a new digital camera - its nearly £500 in most highstreet shops... found it on the net for just over £300.

Depends how badly people want what they have got :)

welcome to my world
around here we have "petcetera" and a small business
both full of rude, inexperienced people
both charge the prices all of you are describing
i have to drive 30 minutes if a want half decent prices and an hour and a half for good prices

i have so many critters and so little time, i end up paying the blasphemous prices  :/ :-( :X

I dunno. Who wouldn't pay for better bred and higher quality fish? If the LFS had hardier, more diverse bred stock than the typical fish then it would be no wonder they demand a higher price.

I totally have to agree with cheesspecialist, smithrc and Teelie. If you want quality you have to pay for it. I don't like to pay a lot for stuff because we all know about markup but I'm willing to pay for stuff I want. Then again, I don't pay for much, my hubby pays it for me :D

I agree with the above posters that say it is worth it. Sure, I can drive 5 minutes to PetCo or PetSmart and spend less on a fish (to be fair, my first fish was a PetSmart fish, two mollies that had fry like mad. They eventually moved to bigger digs when my sister said she wanted them. They are still thriving) Or I could drive 45 minutes to my prefered LFS and pay more. I have never had a problem with their fish, I see they are kept in clean tanks, never have I seen a dead/sick fish in the tanks, and have often times seen fry in the sale tanks! I am perfectly willing to pay more to get a better quality fish. And I am willing to drive farther to get it. The same is true in all aspects of our lives. I am willing to buy generic/off brand potato chips, but I prefer to ensure the highest quality livestock I can get.

One thing i hae found never hurts to ask, is if the store you are in will price match. This applies to everything on earth you can purchase. If you can talk to a manager and point out that lots of other shops in town sell for 15 % less he may match their price or at least come down alittle on what they had originally asked for.

very true! i just recently found out a fish store here will match any other local shop

and yea, take the quality of the fish into consideration as well

I you can buy healthy fish cheaper than the same kind at double the price, then I see no problem buying the cheaper one. If you give your fish optimum conditions to live in, then the cheaper one will do just as well, if not better, than the expensive one.

but that store and another store had the SAME exact things. Im not going to pay $50 for two electric yellows when I can find better ones for only $11 for two.

How do you know their lineage? If they came from non-interbred stock and had more diverse genes, you wouldn't know it looking at them. Or if their parents were wild caught, they would have fresh genes.
