lfs ripping you off

Did you? So what did they say? The impression I get is you have no idea on the history behind the fish.

I you can buy healthy fish cheaper than the same kind at double the price, then I see no problem buying the cheaper one. If you give your fish optimum conditions to live in, then the cheaper one will do just as well, if not better, than the expensive one.
I think that makes sense. However, I also think the implication here was that the cheaper fish was coming from someplace that carries lower quality fish. I for one do not overly trust that a pet superstore or WalMart is going to have conditions that are best for the fish. I do trust that my LFS, which deals only in fish/aquarium products knows more and has better cared for fish. Just because two stores have the same fish, doesn't mean they are the same. The same quality, lineage, care. Any one of these things could mean the difference between a fish that thrives in your tank or one that lives a while then dies.

teelie who r u, the fish price nazi? :/

how do you know the lineage is better for more expensive fish, chances are if they have been in captivity for more than a few generations they will have similar genes. you have to have something like 500 fish in order to ensure there is no reduction in the gene pool.

If you can get the same species of fish that obviously isnt hybridised for half the price why not go for it?

Not to speak for anyone, but it seems to me what teelie is trying to say is that sometimes a cheaper fish is just that; a cheaper fish. Many times a LFS will have higher quality fish than another store. Many times this higher quality is worth a higher price. If you can ensure the fish you buy at half price is kept as well or is as healthy as the more expensive fish, then by all means buy it. Teelie (and no one else) is trying to stop you.

The bottom line, before you start calling people names, is this: People pay what they feel something is worth. If you don't think that fish is worth $25, dont buy it. No one is forcing you to. By all means, go somewhere else and buy one cheaper. I feel it is worth paying more money to buy a fish from people who recongize me when I walk into their store. People who can answer questions correctly, or try to find the correct answers vs someone who makes crap up. I rather buy fish from a store that has healthy fish, no dead fish in their tanks, many fish with fry, tanks with water that I know is cleaned (I see them clean it when I shop) etc. I don't care that the price is higher. I know my fish will be healthy when I bring it home. It will not bring disease to my tank. And if I do have a problem, it will get taken care of to my satisfaction and to the benefit of my fish. This is all worth a higher price tag.

fair enough if you feel that you are getting better quality by paying more, but the best fish store in my area is also usually the cheapest, and i have at least 20 to choose from (that i would bother going to, more in the shopping centres). they keep the water clean, stop selling and eradicate at the 1st site of any diesese.

Perhaps they are able to offer so many fish at a descent price is because they have such a high turnover and profit more from the number sold more than the profit per fish.

i wasnt calling people names i just feel that tellie is a fish price nazi.

Ok....maybe I haven't had enough coffee yet

But why would anyone pay an extra 20 bucks(above the fish price) to buy two??Wouldn't that be a real rip?????????

yeah, i know. But thats what it said.

Ya know Tellie I asked they why they were so expensive and they said that theyre parents were from the wild. So I called the other store and they said the same thing. So they were the SAME THING.

BTW did you know that lfs in certain areas charge more because of the clientel? They dont have to be better. Some of them are worse quality.

FishDan explained what I meant. Fish are considered more valuable depending on their quality. Of course there's also the value you're willing to pay for a fish and if a higher quality or better bred fish is more, you'll have to decide if you want that or one of poorer quality. If both fish have the same quality and breeding and background, then it's up to you to decide which to get.

And as he said, no one is making or forcing anyone to buy any fish at a certain price though the obvious exception here is what the rate the store is selling them at. If you don't want to pay top dollar for a fish and choose to get it elsewhere, no one is going to stop you, but you can't complain that people are selling the fish so expensively if no one is making you buy it from them.

WRS, you said it yourself, other places are selling the supposedly same linage of fish (wild parents) at cheaper rates. Why not go there instead of griping over the higher price from another store?

Did you think the other store might be selling them cheaper because their conditions aren't as good, or they have some kind of special going on or any number of reasonable explanations? Of course the expensive store might just be an upscale one charging more so their upscale customers feel they're getting a better deal.
