I think that makes sense. However, I also think the implication here was that the cheaper fish was coming from someplace that carries lower quality fish. I for one do not overly trust that a pet superstore or WalMart is going to have conditions that are best for the fish. I do trust that my LFS, which deals only in fish/aquarium products knows more and has better cared for fish. Just because two stores have the same fish, doesn't mean they are the same. The same quality, lineage, care. Any one of these things could mean the difference between a fish that thrives in your tank or one that lives a while then dies.I you can buy healthy fish cheaper than the same kind at double the price, then I see no problem buying the cheaper one. If you give your fish optimum conditions to live in, then the cheaper one will do just as well, if not better, than the expensive one.
Not to speak for anyone, but it seems to me what teelie is trying to say is that sometimes a cheaper fish is just that; a cheaper fish. Many times a LFS will have higher quality fish than another store. Many times this higher quality is worth a higher price. If you can ensure the fish you buy at half price is kept as well or is as healthy as the more expensive fish, then by all means buy it. Teelie (and no one else) is trying to stop you.moneywastedonfish said:teelie who r u, the fish price nazi?
how do you know the lineage is better for more expensive fish, chances are if they have been in captivity for more than a few generations they will have similar genes. you have to have something like 500 fish in order to ensure there is no reduction in the gene pool.
If you can get the same species of fish that obviously isnt hybridised for half the price why not go for it?
