Popped to Ashford Aquatics (near Heathrow) at lunchtime on the hunt for some reasonably priced Bolivian Rams and thought I'd share the experience.

I've been here previously, so not my first visit, and I was hoping to find some more reasonably priced stock than the Maidenhead's that are more local to me.

They have around 150 tanks covering pretty much all types of tropicals and I can't say I saw a single unhealthy or dead fish in any of the tanks. It's nice to see a shop that employs a substrate and plant or rock cover in nearly all of the display tanks in what clearly appears to be an attempt to make the fish feel more 'at home'. I managed to find some Bolivians for just £3.95 (haven't seen them for less than £7.50 locally for some time) and they looked in great condition (a return weekend trip beckons)

A couple of whiptail cats caught my eye (a royal and a red), and some very large (3") yellow rabbit snails looked interesting.

It's one of the few places I have seen that sell ghost shrimp (as feeders) - 50P for 10

They appear to have quite a decent array of Marine as well, but since I'm not well versed with the salty side I will avoid commenting on the quality of the stock.

If you are local to the area, then I would say it's well worth a visit.

How good is the public transport links to get there?

.

there is a bus stop nearby that the 441 and 591 bus uses (if that's helpful). I would imagine that the proximity to Heathrow would mean there are more nearby as well.

Not near a train/tube station though. Closest would be one of Heathrow tube terminals, Hatton Cross or possibly even Staines overground.....but you'd nead a bus from either of them to get there.

It's near quite a large airport, if that helps? :hey:

Lol it can be one thing getting into an airport by public transport, but getting out on foot is another matter

441 seems to go into heathrow, and the X26 gets me from croydon to there, might give it a look at the weekend

Very true, it just struck me as amusing - some LFS are near bus stations and train stations - this one's near the busiest airport in Europe - you can't get much more "public transport" than airports! :)

Went here again today (was passing) and I'd like to add that the naming of the fish impresses me (almost all have the latin name as well as the common) and that the elephant nose fish were very clearly marked with good advice about species only tank, providing lots of cover and describing how they sense for food.

Think I'm going back tonight to pick up the rams. A few did have signs of sunken bellies though so will look to avoid those specimens.
