Led Lighting Build With Pics

There's just a tad of difference between using 3mm/5mm LEDs and using high power ones especially in marine or plants setups. 3mm/5mm don't really cut the mustard in these setups!!!

Couple of questions if you don't mind:
What thickness acrylic were you using for your mount and were did you buy it? Never seen any in local B&Q and P&P is typically high on eBay acrylics given the physical size.
When you moved over to the larger heatsinks how did you attach them to the acrylic?

I didn't buy the acrylic for the mounting board. It was a multi leaflet holder that my Dad had and took the leaflet 'pockets off of it and used the backing board. It was 6mm. you could use or any other material using the method I used.

I used the large heatsinks on the open top mini luminaire and not on the mounting board main lighting.

On the main board I have the small ram heatsinks which are then screwed into the board with a piece of metal reflector in between heatsink and acrylic.

Check out the original thread. seems you haven't read it all and there is a lot of info in there that also helped me in the build so is quite useful.

Yes I went back through your thread, quite a few nuggets of information in there.

UPDATE Module1
Ok so I received heatsinks today, I am waiting on my new LED driver so in the meantime decided to turn my test setup into a permenant 1 LED module.
Treated myself to a new digital camera which also arrived today, not had much time to play with settings however quality is better.

Here is a picture of the 1 LED module, bit of plastic conduit, drilled some holes in the back and fashioned them into picture type hooks. Put some screws into the hood for mounting, can easily take the module on and off without any tools.
On the end of grey cable is the 3W driver neatly inside the plastic.
PSU to module is split with a simple connector.

The heatsink has a self adhesive pad which is handy, unit is held on with cable ties for now.

Also received final PSU today 24V 1.2A shown below, will put that and the driver in a small plastic box.

Gave in and ordered a good LED Driver along with a plastic box for the PSU/Driver.

Originally I was going to buy the multiple LED driver unit from the same place I got the LEDs (Hong Kong), upon emailing them to ask for more information on spec they told me that their dimming didn't work anyway! At least they were honest lol
It would be fixed in a later revision of the unit in a few months if I wanted to wait.

Went for this:
RCD-24-0.70
Input 4.5-36V
Constant Current 700ma
Output Voltage 2-32

There is dimming functionality which I will investigate once Module 2 is running.

Hi, im interested to know how your going to mount and connect up that driver as im on the look out for one thats capable of driving 8 to 10 1w leds.

Looking good so far.

Cheers Gordon.

UPDATE: Module 2

OK received the new driver on Monday, been a little busy. However all is now built and running smoothly so here are the details:

Got a plastic case to house the PSU and LED Driver, drilled a couple of holes in case for the cables. The driver I have is the PCB version (only one RS had) there is wired version out soon which would allow a nicer join. The white plug is 2 pin adapater to connect to the lighting module. All tested and working.

Another picture of the power unit with case screwed on.

Took module 1 and simply added more LED on to it as below, it is good that the LED themselves come with multiple terminals as accidently pulled on of the solder pads off when I was desoldering the original 1 LED. I tested each LED individually before attaching them.

Light test, all working first time.

Now to see what it is like in the tank, looking good!

Future Plans
Future plans could include a smaller module with say 2 blue LED and use a micro controller to do controlled dimming on the LED Driver.
Although I should have really got a slightly bigger PSU in the first place if I wanted to do another 3W Rail, could always go with a few blue 1W.
I am pretty happy with lighting as is now and a manual socket timer.
