Been fiddling around with new cichlid tank for about a month. Who goes with who, who eats who! In my ventures on the web and bookstores, references are usually scientific. I am not a slacker and looked for hours just to get my hands on a scientific/common name reference! Any ideas where one would get their mitts on such a list? A cold beer is waiting in exchange for a list! :hey:

Thanks, have a good one eh!

Try http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/ (hoping that link complies with forum rules). You will have to search by group, then tear the list out manually.

I don't take beer, but will settle for a bottle of red ;)

There is a reason for all the Latin. Given the vast number of different fish, Latin is needed to insure that everybody is on the same page. Common names are often misapplied or the same one will be used for several fish. In fact that is why Latin is used in classifying virtually all identified members of any species, not just fish. The science of this naming is called Taxonomy and it is designed to remove any doubt as what a named species is. It keeps everyone on the same page.

Thanks Kitty Kat! Excellent. Now i can find Latin name and family etc. for fish just labelled common names ... Rusty Cichlid for example. Not everybody labels with latin. That was the prob.

Okay, Okay.... bottle of red :good:

Thanks again!

I would suggest the a much better place to look on that site would be the page where it says:

Need help identifying your cichlid?
Unfortunately, many fish shops do not properly label the fishes they sell. Often they are sold with only a common name (e.g., Red Top Zebra, Electric Blue) or even worse, in an unlabeled tank they mysteriously referred to as "Misc African cichlids". Common names are very unreliable and can vary from one supplier to the next. Scientific names (i.e., binomial latin names), on the other hand, are the only names which do not vary from one shop to the next or even between languages.

That is followed by an illustrated explanation on how to go about identifying various fish in stores where they are not labelled with their Latin name.

I hope this helps some also.

Thanks TwoTankAmin

Great site! Thanks, have a few lfs that have those "misc african cichlids" tanks. Since I just got into the game, i stay away from those. Learnt that the hard way; tank said zebra but after a few weeks, clearly a kenyi which i didnt want. He is the "big" boss of the tank and have to keep an eye on him. (no chuckling Rifty) lol lol. One lfs has latin on all tanks which helps sooooo much, and a great chap who isnt just into selling but takes time to chat and some advice on stocking my tank, like others on here been really helpfull.

Thanks again, the other site and your link help alot!!!

Have a good one eh!

Thanks for taking the time to post, always appreciate it! :good:

Have a good one eh! Hummmmm.. slides a cold one down to ya.

The lol was in reference to your post title! i totally agree!!! why can't they all have easy shorterned names like the yellow lab.
i'm sure after a few weeks they will roll of your tounge like a host of the discovery channel! :good:

with regards to your Kenyi running amock may i suggest a rescape each time you add fish to avoid too much attention

good luck Gavin

not to worry... but once you have learned all the proper names someone will be around to change them again

Yup re classification the bane of my life

latin is cool though once you learn what the words mean they usually just describe the animal, fish's etc description

regards

And is all the basis you need to communicate with someone in a decent LFS anywhere in the world :good:

I would like to rescape that Kenyi back to the lfs :shout: Was sittin in my lazy boy, being soothed by bubbling filter water, tranquil blue lights, watching the new crew nosing around until: dang thing: tears around digging up my java plants (plastic) i so carefull and strategically place around bottom caves.....

This could be a test of will!

Stupid question? Rescape... in another tank or is there "boxes" for in the same tank for solitary confinement??

Regards, have a good one!

So true Kat.. Have learned quickly that those who know about fish, know latin!!! A good test when at the lfs... That site ya passed on is a keeper. Taking time to go through and jot them down in notepad!

I should have it mastered by the time summer rolls around.

Have a good one eh!
