Last night one of my Panda Corys went into an uncontrollable spin, it was so quick that I was not able to video it.  I heard a slight thud then noticed the Cory just spinning out of control.

I had not long done a water change, maybe about 3 hours previously, and the water level therefore would be topped up.  I wondered if when going up for air it had hit the lid of the light casing, which although is not in the water, is not far off it since the WC.  This would explain the slight thud, although equally it could have been just the noise of the Cory twirling out of control.

The Cory eventually came to rest on the bottom of the tank and was breathing a little heavily.  I have checked on it this morning and all appears well i.e. it is still alive, in fact I would not know which of them it is.

I have done some searches on it and have come across something called "Whirling Disease" Myxobolus cerebralis, which I really hope it is not this as it does not sound good.  In fact, they state that the only treatment is euthanasia!  Having called my LFS they are not familiar with the disease but also state euthanasia is usually the only option for a whirling fish.

I found a post on here Whirling Disease?, but this does not really help as it seems that the problems were more than a one off incident.

I also found this Spinning Corydoras???, which is more like what happened.

This is the closest video I have found so far, rummy nose tetra with whirling disease , although my Cory spun a lot faster and from top to bottom like a cyclone all over the place.

At this stage, I am unsure whether the Panda has this disease or it was the former i.e. knocked itself at the top of the tank?

Also, I have Kusuri Wormer Plus and am considering worming this tank to be on the safe side.

Please input any thoughts, ideas or experiences?

Panda Cory, found dead in the tank and thus assuming it is the same Cory.  FYI: I did not use the wormer.

I know it's a little different, but one of my Bronze Cory's did this when he lost an eye, he's now fine and coping with only one eye, and no longer twirls around!

So sorry to hear.
Just had a similar problem with an albino, near as I was able to reconoiter, was she was eggbound and had to be killed. Sorry just don't use fancy names for it.
She was fine the night before, then twirling as you described. By the time I found an answer, she was gone.

Corys often do this just before they die unfortunately, whether it's whirling disease or not I don't know

Thanks all, and interesting observation @ Lilfishy.  I just hope it was nothing "nasty" that could spread to the other occupants.

I had the Pandas in quarantine for 2 weeks prior to moving them to their new homes and I did not notice anything out of the ordinary, other than...one Cory was often seen on its own, not with the group.  So maybe, there has always been a problem with this Cory and what I saw was alas the beginning of the end :(

BTW I never saw the twirling again, but that does not mean it did not happen in my absence.

So sorry to hear about your cory RCA. I'm not familiar with them, but losing any fish is hard whatever the cause. I once had to euthanise a fish on its last legs so to speak - used the clove oil method as most of the other methods seem cruel one way or another.
Are cories jumping fish? Could it have jumped up into the lighting casing causing head trauma and what you saw was a kind of fit? Just speculating here tho.

Thanks Mamashack, Corys do not jump but they go to the surface to gulp air, hence there was a slim chance that was the slight thud I heard.  TBH I do not think I will ever know.  The tank has been a very stable tank for me without any major issues, so fins crossed it was a one off.  Just glad I did not have to euthanase, as like you I have done it once and hated it, as we all do.

I offer condolences for your cory RCA. It is always depressing when you lose part of the family...

Thanks TallTree.

Sad to have to report I lost another one yesterday/overnight.  Again I saw a twirling Cory and later when I checked on it there was an Assassin snail on its tail!  I took the Cory out, it did not put up much fight so this was not a good sign.  I isolated it but sadly it passed away

Not sure if this was the original twirling Cory or another one showing the same behaviour?

I am not sure what it is that is causing this, as this tank has always been stable, and the Corys were quarantined for two weeks prior to be added.  I have been using a new food lately, which all the fish love, but I do not think it is this as there are Corys in other tanks that seem fine.  All parameters are good, but will be checking them again.

As Lilfishy stated it can be before a Cory dies that they do this...

Any thoughts, ideas or similar experiences welcome.

Thanks Talltree for the info.  Not been around as much as I have lost six fish in 48 hours!  Two Cory's, three new female fighters (bad batch & sadly quite distressing) and a sick minnow, in a combination of two tanks...

My LFS were great when I spoke to them just out of interest, as to what it could be that was causing the Corys to twirl and die?  The manager then offered me x2 new Pandas, which was good of them as it was awhile since I bought the fish.  He said it could be them not adjusting to the pH, but that hopefully it was just those two.  Interestingly I have/had a total of nine Pandas and these are the only two to go down with this!
