Last night one of my Panda Corys went into an uncontrollable spin, it was so quick that I was not able to video it. I heard a slight thud then noticed the Cory just spinning out of control.
I had not long done a water change, maybe about 3 hours previously, and the water level therefore would be topped up. I wondered if when going up for air it had hit the lid of the light casing, which although is not in the water, is not far off it since the WC. This would explain the slight thud, although equally it could have been just the noise of the Cory twirling out of control.
The Cory eventually came to rest on the bottom of the tank and was breathing a little heavily. I have checked on it this morning and all appears well i.e. it is still alive, in fact I would not know which of them it is.
I have done some searches on it and have come across something called "Whirling Disease" Myxobolus cerebralis, which I really hope it is not this as it does not sound good. In fact, they state that the only treatment is euthanasia! Having called my LFS they are not familiar with the disease but also state euthanasia is usually the only option for a whirling fish.
I found a post on here Whirling Disease?, but this does not really help as it seems that the problems were more than a one off incident.
I also found this Spinning Corydoras???, which is more like what happened.
This is the closest video I have found so far, rummy nose tetra with whirling disease , although my Cory spun a lot faster and from top to bottom like a cyclone all over the place.
At this stage, I am unsure whether the Panda has this disease or it was the former i.e. knocked itself at the top of the tank?
Also, I have Kusuri Wormer Plus and am considering worming this tank to be on the safe side.
Please input any thoughts, ideas or experiences?
