Hi
I've not been in Tropical fish keeping long, but a friend of mine gave me a breeding pair of Kribensis. a week or so ago the female laid eggs in a cave they built under a rock, and sure enough about a week later emerged about 150 fry. The parents seemed to be protecting them from my Angel and various Tetras, they even chased off my big Silver Dollar. But to my disapointment, the numbers got lower and lower, and now i can count only 8!!
What am i doing wrong?

Hi Mark,

You are not doing anything wrong!

It is normal to lose fry in a community tank - no matter how good the kribs are at defending their fry the others will manage to grab the occasional one. You will also find that the parents will eat some of them, natural selection at work.

My kribs had about forty or fifty fry from their first brood, of which eight survived to adulthood. They have a brood at the moment, I have only spotted about ten fry so far but they are a week or two old so I missed them at first.

HTH, Eddie

hey

i would say if you wanna keep they last remaining fry to go and buy a tank divider then they have more of a chance to live

hope all goes well

Maybe because you had 150 you notice more that the numbers have reduced?? Or maybe that is just rubbish!

Like Eddie's, I'm sure a few will survive, and they will be the strongest. You don't want to be over-run with them after all! And the rest of your fish get a tasty treat occasionaly!

I've had about 40 odd in my first batch, and haven't noticed any being eaten, but I'm sure some have been...possibly at night when they are all sleeping.

Hope you keep enjoying the experince as I am!!

kribensis parents sometimes eat their fry.... that also could have been what happened... if they were defending the fry they probably ate the fry themselves.... kribs often do that their first few batches of babieeesss
