Kribensis Fry Dying

Though I don't think its the problem, but you could put a hang on back filter on that tank, just for extra filteration.

fry shouldnt make so much mess that you need an extra filter. the rotting food would be a problem but if your clearing it out daily/syphoning it up that shouldnt be a problem.

sponge filters are best with fry, anything else i think is too powerful, and unless you somehow block the flow, it is likely they could get sucked in.

hows the fry count today star?

4 dead this morning. All was well at 12.30 but at 7.30 am bodies :-( . One has a white hairy fungal growth all over it, seems a lot for being dead at the most 7 hours??? I just dont get it. I can only think it must have been the whitespot in the main tank when the eggs were laid must have affected the batch somehow.

a long shot but yes maybe the medication damaged the eggs in some way so the fry are not properely developed, but if this was the case i would have expected to see the deaths from the beginning not just now all of a sudden.

the piece of slate in the tank, has that always been in aquariums or was it only recently got for the fry?

what was the tank used for before the fry and how was it cleaned out?

The main tank wasnt medicated when the eggs were laid, the whitespot appeared a few days after I removed the eggs. The slate in the fry tank was the peice the eggs were laid on, but I did clean once the eggs hatched. The tank they are in now was the origional tank I bought for my son which had guppies in, It was used for a bit for my small koi that I thought was ill, but turns out just to be a tiny koi. I cleaned out the tank with very hot water before I used it, no chemicals or anything.

I have changed the water again this morning for water from my sons tank. I have also removed the sponge filter just in case there is something in the sponge, shouldnt be as I washed it through and left it in tank water before using it.

I am very tempted to remove the remaining babies from this tank and put them in my sons tank, he has neons, cardinals and some guppies and a 6 week old Krib (who was added to the tank at 3 weeks old), but am worried incase it is some diesese and I pass it on to the others. They are just so small you cannot really see anything on the bodies apart from this whiteness between the eyes once they are dead.

The worst thing is they are all acting like perfectly healthy fry, eating, swimming about, pooping propperly even with the magnifying glass no of their fins are clamped down or anything. I just dont get what I am doing wrong.

Argh brain gone, the sponge filter was running in another tank after I washed it through and had no problems in that tank.

Just sooooooo stressed about these poor babies.

maybe just unhealthy fry :(

it may be best to let nature run its course and try again next time.

i personally dont think its an infection. id expect to see the fry dying at the same time not a few here a few there and always at night?
i think its either bad fry or an outside factor we've not crossed yet.

i would be tempted to put half in with your sons tank, maybe in a floating net to keep a better eye on them?

did you say you medicated the fry tank with something? normally a half dose should be used with fry not a full dose? (unless of course its nothing strong) :)

sorry to hear your still having deaths star, but i really cant think of anything else it could be right now :( sorry i cant be of any more help

I would just like to thank everyone who has offered advice.

Spishy I think you are right it must be just a sick batch of babies. Its been 6 hours now since I added the water from sons tank and removed the sponge filter. All the babies are still ok. Will see what happens tonight, if there are more dead babies in the morning I will transfer the remaining fry to my sons tank and just see what happens. I only have a breeding trap and they would get out of that. His tank is really heavily planted so plenty of hiding places for them. It was melafix I added to the tank, full dose!!!!!!! will just have to see what happens and try again next time.

another 2 dead this morning, I am going to transfer the remaining ones into my sons tank. I can only think it must be something wrong with the tank I am using, or temperature fluctuations at night somehow as they only seem to die at night.

if you move them over and they are not in a breeder or trap, keep a careful eye out for dead ones, the last thing you want is some dying in your sons tank and rotting as this may cause problems if enough die unseen chick :)

I know what you mean its worrying knowing what to do for the best. I have put them in my sons tank, they all dissapeared within seconds into the java jungle. My sons tank is the one overloaded with trumpet snails, bladder snails and ramshorns, I think if one does die they will get it before I do, the poor little pleco in there rarely gets his aglae wafers because the trumpets drag it under the gravel before he gets to it.

I can let you know in a few weeks if I see any of them, because I dont think I will find them now till they are bigger.

Just to let everyone who offered help with my dying Krib babies. I realeased them into my sons tank with guppy fry and I have seen at least two survivors. It must have been something in the tank they were in.

good job, 2 survivers is better than none and atleast now you can assess the diffrences between your tanks :)
