Kribensis Bully

hey guys - new to the forum, but not to the hobby

i have kept fish for over 5 years now and just recently i decided to get a pair of kribensis as i think they are stunning fish. i got a male and female and they got on fabulously. then a few days later my female died. so i bought another female.

im my tank at the time i had a gibbecep corydoras and 5 mollies, then the male and female krib. (tank is 90l)

now the 2nd krib lasted a day because the male constantly bullied her, and i think this is why she died.

the store didnt have any more kribs in so i left it until now to buy some more. the krib has now bullied off 4 mollys and my cory. and is now after my gibbecep, and new addition bristle nose.

so tonight i brought back 3 female kribensis for the male, in hope that he would stop the bullying... he just went for all 3

im stuck for what to do!! i thought they were peaceful fish and the first female and him were fine together so i cant understand y he is doing it?!

help!!

hi was wondering how your first female krib died? was she bullied by your male too? I wouldnt add any more fish with him right now

nope he showed no signs of bullying they just rubbed up against each other.

i tested my water after she died, as i do if i lose fish just to make sure, and there was a slight but of ammonia in there so im thinking that killed her, becos the male didnt show any signs of aggression to her.

ammonia levels etc are fine now and i have gibbecep, bristlenose, molly, male krib and 3 female krib in the tank. they arent stressed as they are all showing their full colours... one of the females bends in half when the male comes near her, im not sure if this is defensive, or mating behaviour?!?!

I sperated him from the others for a couple of days and re-arranged the tank, moved some stones about etc. Have your kribs a cave? mine didnt and I made one while he was away from the tank. He was fine when I put him back, it gave the female chance to establish her territory first then allow him in.

I agree to keep him apart for a bit and caves are very important for kribs.I find kribs one of the most beautiful and amazing fish but when there are females it seems they cause problems. breeding kribs always seem to disturb the peace

agreed breeding kribs can be very territorial and aggressive. we had them (stupidly) with danios & neons when we started out fishkeeping, at first the female krib bullied the male but then they seemed to hit it off and appeared to look like they were going to breed, they then started atacking all the small fish in our tank - killing a couple until we saw what was happening, felt very guilty & rehomed our kribs. more than one female krib can also cause probs as one of them will try to be dominant & may well bully the others even in the absence of any males. we would love a pair but have stuck with just a female these days. she only occasionally chases a cory ourt of 'her' cave but has never actually had a go at them she just raises her fin & swims in the resting corys direction if one parks in 'her' cave and its enough to see them off.
