Anyone know that thecross between a goldfish and koi are called? I ahve seen them before.. just don't know the name :X

my dads mate acidentaly made these and gave some to my dad, there lovely fish but i dont think they have a nickname.

Why would you want to do that on purpose? In my opinion carp are quite ugly, infact they are ruining the local water ways around here, have to kill alot of em off. Id be interested in pics though, iv never heard of domestic fish being crossed with wild strains.

Koi are not too ugly.. actually carp are very ugly >>

i cant get any god pics coz there in a pond..... a big deep one....
also my dad has a 3' ghost koi , yes three foot. named fatty :p

it is not possible to cross a goldfish with a koi.

What you really have is a cross between a good looking koi, and an ugly koi lol. Or a cross between a good looking or substantial koi and the wild "koi" (common carp)

For the first one, you would get a funny looking koi.

For the second one, this is what you get:

:look: that fish alive? haha I like the fins.. anyway.. i am pretty sure a comet can make a hybrid witha koi.. not the other types though.

well, where i go fishing, there is a pond that i fish called the carp pond, and there are lots of nice size common, mirror, ghost, koi carp and also gold fish, the last time i went up there, i caught a goldfish cross koi, it was black, white, orange and red, but had the shape of a koi carp, it is one of the nicest freshwater fish ive ever seen, then i realised that everyone was catching similar type of fish.
so i dont see why koi cant cross with goldfish :)

oh and btw, i disagree, carp are beautiful fish, but thats my opinion :p

False, koi crap can in fact cross with the common comet goldfish, iv even found pictures.

Actually those are NOT koi crossed with goldfish at all, the red ones are just Comet goldfish and the large one is a Butterfly koi. As far as i know, its impossible to crossbreed these two fish.

I have read from numerous reputable sources - including lengthy scientific studies - that the two can be cross bred. Allthough Cyprinus carpio
and Carassius auratus are of a different genus, there have been several well documented cases of hybridization. However, the offspring are typically sterile, just like most cross-genus mixings. The main reason people think it can not occur is that it is not something typically and deliberately done. Furthermore, if the chances of reproductive offspring is low, there is no profit in making such hybrids, and no way to refine and select for specific "looks" via selective breeding. So, they are uncommon and undesirable, and hybridization has thus been neither popularized or publicised to the fishkeeping community.
There is an article with some pictures on KoiVet.com.

That said, butterfly koi are NOT hybrids of Commons and Koi, a common misconception.
