i have four knight gobies. i love them dearly! until today... i came home from work to see that one of them has gone mad. s/he has dug a hole under the coconut cave. s/he has become extremely territorial and actually killed a peacock gudgeon. s/he digs out the sand an retreats back inside the cave. no one can get close without getting attacked. is s/he preparing for spawning or has it gone bloody mad? i have searched for info on breeding but have found not much that would explain this. any suggestions???

Sorry to be off-topic but i want to get Knight gobies myself they have them now in my LFS do they really require Brackish water or are they ok in freshwater? Thnx.
And I hope u figure out what's wrong.

all my tanks are strictly brackish, i read they can tolerate some freshwater conditions. my lfs had them in fresh and they looked terrible. i bought my four and within days in the brackish water and good food they looked wonderful. i love my lil buggers. they add so much character to my tank. im one of those who does the opposite of norm. let me know what you decide to do, and good luck to you

Lucky :) I might setup a brackish tank eventually just not at the moment i like brackish puffers too that's why. knight gobies look very lovely fish. Thnx for the info and good luck with them!

thank you that is very kind of you. i hope you do setup a brackish tank and have the enjoyment i share. good luck with your venture!

its official, they have spawned!!! i know its a full moon, but im really dumbfounded. my snail laid an egg sack, the gobies spawned and i had a molly drop! what am i in for????

Never heard of any Knight goby spawning, are they free swimming now and how many have they spawned?
Please update and if possible with pics :)

the eggs hatched, it was kinda neat except i forgot to move the hut to the other tank, and when the hubby remembered the daddy was chasing something and eating they lil swimmers! how sad for us next time i will be more prepared. it was my fault they spawned. i forgot to add salt back after a water change

So they spawn when the salinity is low, so less salt in water?

it has to do with the rainy season, i accidently made them think it was time by changing the water which was probably a few degrees cooler and forgetting to add the salt back

Hi lumpyheffalump :)

I just wanted to say thanks for posting this thread. I saw some of them in my lfs last week and then read your thread about keeping them. I didn't originally get them because I was worried about keeping a brackish tank but today I picked up the last six they had. I like the way they look a lot. :)

yay! inchworm i love my little babies!!! they make me so happy to watch. I hope you have much fun in keeping them. I have decided to wait a month or so and see if i can once again trick them into spawning. i am better prepared with information and ideas. took forever to get the info i needed. but persistence pays off. right now all three of my tanks are brackish. i have learned so much from this site i recommend it to everyone. my lfs owner almost fell on the floor when i mentioned the spawning to her. good luck and hope all goes well for you. i have a whole tank of bumblebee gobies that make me about as happy as my knights. ut oh here i go rambling, my apologies...

Hi lumpyheffalump :)

I'm glad you are here and responded so quickly. I just got them home and am getting ready to shuffle fish around and make a place for them. What do you do to keep them healthy? Do you use aquarium salt and if so, how much.

I didn't really expect there would be any left at the store and must admit to being unprepared.

i have the api salt, i use a tablespoon to every 5 gallons, this is important to have salt. very important! i have a sand bottom which is so much better on them. i also feed a good variety of food. they are lil piglets. i just snapped a few pics of them will post when i figrue it out, although they are hiding in most i just took.

Hi lumpyheffalump :)

Good! I have that and sand for the substrate too. I guess I'll have to set up some caves and plants too. I'm not even sure how many are males or females, because I couldn't tell in their tank. :)
