Personally I hate the substrate. ugh!! electric blue. Thats my wife and our first tank. I am at this point being cheap and refuse to replace it with anything else.
but i would love to.
Check out my 36g journal. I've got this new sand substrate from Carib Sea that I picked up at Petsmart. It looks really good. It was like $24.99 for a 20lb bag. Maybe a bag for your 10g? A little pricey, but you won't need so much and it looks very good. Well, at least I like it.
Yeah, I try not to think about the electric blue gravel much. The next 10g, setup within a couple of months, had natural gravel, so thank goodness the blue phase was over quickly. I was 12 years old when I setup that first tank.
Blue rams have had a batch of eggs almost every 10 days for the last 2 months. I finally have some fry swimming around again. I have added a bit of mesh to keep the other fish separated from them. I bought some Hikari first bites, so lets see how that goes. I am trying to feed them at least 4-5 per day. it is hard when you are at work during the day.
one of my blue rams died this evening. He was the singled out male in the grp. the other 2 are doing just fine. All the water parameters were a little high but seemed safe. No other fish is showing any signs of illness.
He had some small red spots on him, so I did some research and found that it could be ammonia related. Did 35% water change in main tank and 75% change in hospital tank. Moved him over and added Ethromyacin last night. Came home from work today and he was upside down. I am so sad at this. I also added some safe coat to the water to help rid the tank of ammonia, chlorine etc...
well, in the few tanks i have. I have unfortunately experienced another death.
This time 2 in a row. It was a male blue ram. He had a white spot on the side of his head. I was adding antifungal to the water and doing water changes daily.
and then on the same day, i had my female betta "gracie" died for some reason. She was bloated but showed no signs of dropsy. I figure it was just her time. Meanwhile, the tank that they came from has another set of rams laying eggs. In fact they died on saturday morning and the eggs were laid sat night.
Now they have all hatched and all squirming around.
Well i have changed the look of the 75g tank again. I just did not care for it the way it was. I have not added any new fish though so that is seemingly going well. I need to open a photobucket account so I can upload pics.
All my blue ram babies have since passed and I have also broken down the 10 gallon tank. So now i am just stuck with the 75g. The wife is having issues with my thoughts on having more than one tank. She says that it looks cluttered with all the aquariums in one area. I disagree, but some battles are better left untouched.
we lose the battle, but the war rages on!!
Right now i have only one Rena XP2 and a small 10 gallon filter with a surface skimmer attached.
So I am thinking about upgrading the small HOB filter to a 75g rated filter, but i am unsure what to choose.
I like the Marineland Emperor series and also looking at the Bio System Power Filter & Oxy Surface Skimmer.
I am looking for thoughts and opinions on what I should go with.
I am looking for some redundancy as well as increased bio load capacity.
So that is my latest battle. I am not sure what the best move would be, I like the idea of the bio wheel but feel that the surface skimmer can provide an essential element to the cleaning of the tank
If you take a marineland (I assume you are in the US?) canister filter, you would have enough bacterie friendly media in there. I don't know though whether they have amodel that caters for a 75 g. I have one for a 55 gallon. No, I just see that their max. flowrate is 530gph. If you want to have 10x turnover, you won't have enough... I am very happy with mine. You might want to think about getting 2...
Found a banjo catfish dead last night. Did a water change to help get any of crap out of the water.
The poor guy died overnight and my fish ate his whole head. Nothing but bones and a tail.
He was small. The other banjo has a large belly, almost like its pregnant. I think it might be a female.
