I've recently bought a second hand Trigon and have just installed the structured background, but before I go ahead and fill it with water I just wondered if I needed to put anything between the tank and cabinet.

There appears to be a bit of a frame around the base (under the tank walls) such that the bottom of the tank sits about 8mm above the top of the cabinet except at the edges. I assume that the tank is designed to work like this, but just wondered if anybody else with a similar tank had packed the void with anything?

Nope - it shouldn't. And if you had the manual, it would tell you specifically not to.
It's designed to be that way

I suppose thats the problem with buying secind hand, but I did buy the whole kit and kaboodle including new filters and all sorts of extra bits (and all less than 12 months old) for £150
