Hi everyone

My tank is a Jewel Reckord 800, 110 litres with the standard internal filter. For those who know the brand it's a compact super with a 400l/hour pump and internal 100W heater.

The filter comprises an open 'basket' type plastic assembly which slides in/out vertically and holds the foam inserts. There is a gap of about an inch between the two foam inserts, and because I don't want to use the carbon foam insert (as I'm going to plant the tank after it's fishless cycle), there's another available spare inch at the top of the assembly. Water enters at the top and is drawn out of the bottom having passed through everything.

So....does anyone know if that inch in between the foam filters has to be there, or can I fill it with stuff. Same at the top, can I add things to help filering? An inch doesn't sound much (that's what she said) but the full dimensions of this void are 100mm x 50mm x 25mm (4 x 2 x 1 inch) and it's completely wasted. I could move the foams up or down to change where the space is, there are little plastic tabs to hold them in place but it wouldn't be a big deal.

One of the things I'd like to do is add some crushed coral in a little bag to raise/stabilise the Ph, as I have a very nice (expensive) piece of bogwood which I've removed as it crashed the Ph and stalled the cycle. My tapwater is Ph 7.0, Amm 0, Nitrites 0, Nitrates 5ppm.

Are there any Juwel users who have added stuff, or anyone who can advise?

Thanks

Neil

Hi Neil,

You do not 'need' the gap for the filter to work, actually you can dispose of the sponges and opt for any type of filter material as long as you put it in some kind of filter net to enable easy removal for cleaning etc..

Seem to remember a link on here somewhere to show how to modify your internal juwel filter but cannot find it at present.

Will keep looking though as it was quite a good idea and gives loads more surcace area for biological filteration

Of course don't toss out the bacteria you already have though! WD

ps. look for a drobbyb post to find the link to one of our crushed coral articles
