Juwel Filter... In Or Out?

Hi all, newbee here with a question I hope you can answer.
I have a juwel rio 300 wich I intend to set up as a FOWLR, adding the LR as I can afford it and also slowly building up fish stock very slowly. My question is my LFS told me to take out the internal fitted filter and replace with an external cannister type.
Can I keep the internal (even tho its big) and if so what do I put in it regarding filter media.

Personally id keep it in keep costs down, you can always change it when you have more money after your all set up.As for the media id take it all out if its a juwel i think the only one's you could keep are the grey one's.But id take it all out and replace it with pieces of rock.Others will tell you differant but thats just my opinnon.
